I studied architecture and one of the things that professors wanted us to learn is that lightning is super important for defining space, specially when you make a model and want to make photographs of it.

Stairs are super sensible to this because they can practically disappear if you don't light them properly, and it matters when you want to show off the volumes in your building. They referenced some films as an example to proper lightning and stairs and battleship Potemkin was the best instance of it with the stairway scene.
