So how does the ring work?

here are the facts
>has owl cave insignia on it
>worn (with seemingly no effect) by Teresa Banks for long enough to leave a mark when removed
>found under the Tremond trailer amid smell of burning oil (lodge related)
>on touch makes Chester Desmond go missing
>one year later is worn by Mike as he shouts down Leland and Laura in the road
>given to Laura right before her death by Mike
>the wearing of the ring gives Leland no choice but to kill Laura (because it protects her from being possessed by Bob?)
>found on Annie in hospital
>taken by one of the nurses (as if by some allure)

so what does the ring do? does it have any fixed logic or function? my best understanding is that it puts one's soul in the lodge, and saves Laura from possession by Bob but also damns her to a life divorced from life in the lodge (which is how she speaks to Cooper)

If you've watched the original show and the movie then you know about as much as anyone else. Just start watching season 3.
>>
>>83046073
I don't really know, but I'm curious myself.

>the wearing of the ring gives Leland no choice but to kill Laura (because it protects her from being possessed by Bob?)

Why does Cooper say not to wear the ring?
>>
Is it watchable if you only watched half of s2? I loved the first season but season 2 got really fucking boring
>>
>>83047974
Because then she would be murdered instead of possessed.
>>
>>83047974
That was a deleted scene tho right?
I'm pretty sure it creates a connection between the two worlds, for better or worse.
Also has a strong tie to the man with one arm.
>>
>>83048280
Season 2 has a really good ending
There is a chunk of season 2 that is just rat shit, but push through it. Season 3 will make even less sense otherwise.
>>
It means nothing. Before you dismiss what I'm saying because you think I'm saying nothing means anything, please allow me to continue. When watching Lynch your best bet is to stop looking for meaning or explanation and just take it in.
The ring as an object have impacted you that it is of importance and that is really all you need. it is an element in a story that you feel have some sort of importance.

That's all you really need. Don't try to connect dots, don't try to psychoanalyse it. Meet it like you meet your dreams before you wake up.

nope.

there's one line that lets you know what the ring does and everyone misses it.

I'll wait till I've finished s2 then, ty

It's so sad that Bob's actor died.

I mean Bob Cooper is fucking awesome but still Frank Silva was so good.

Cooper may not have known what the ring did and thus was distrustful of it.
>>
>>83047974

Cooper wanted Laura to be possessed by Bob because then it would alter the timeline and he'd be free from the Black Lodge early on instead of 25 years later. Bob and Cooper were both trying to change the timeline, but Mike succeeded at keeping things the same because she ended up putting on the ring and getting murdered setting the original sequence of events in motion.

>so what does the ring do?

This:

>it protects her from being possessed by Bob

>lets you know what the ring does

Nobody missed that line, it just doesn't actually explain what the ring does. I mean, are you saying what the ring does is wed Bob and Mike? Or wed Mike and Laura? I'm pretty sure it does more than either of those two things. Her putting it on makes Bob get upset and kill her instead of possess her, so that's why most people assume the ring served to prevent Bob from possessing her. How that relates to wedding I have no idea.
>>
>>83046073

I think the ring just gives Lodge beings temporary corporal form in our universe.
>>
>>83048696
I'm pretty sure that was referring to his doppelganger. You see it in the next scene. He evolves into that tree thing
>>
>>83049139

It was, but Lynch dialogue is fully capable of referring to multiple different things, that's kind of a feature of what he does with the crazy dream logic and shit. I don't think it was intentional, but he already has a habit of letting external events steer how he goes about structuring his work e.g. the inclusion of Bob allegedly coming from how he noticed the actor accidentally included in a picture and liked how it looked. He's the sort of guy who would connect Michael refusing to participate and that line about him not being him and imagine after the fact that this is what the ideas were trying to tell him all along. He basically believes in ideas as external entities he fishes for rather than as things he himself is personally generating. It's the same deal with the 25 years line. He might not have originally intended for that line to mean the show would literally come back in 25 years, but he ended up going with that as one of its meanings and making it happen.

If you think you're confused now, wait until you read the Secret History book and hear about all the people who had that ring over the years. One of them was Richard Nixon.

maybe the opposite of our worlds engagement/wedding ring. Wedding rings is a symbol of love and protection.

It would wed MIKE (The Man from Another Place, the dwarf) and whoever wears it. MIKE says that he's devoted himself to stopping BOB. He gives that ring to Laura when she's in BOB's clutches in that trailer, and BOB said he wanted to either be her or kill her.
So assuming BOB was attempting to possess her, maybe the ring prevented that forcing him to kill her. BOB's first victim Teresa also wore the ring, although it seemed like the reason BOB killed Teresa was because she realized Leland was the father of either Laura or Ronette.

On the subject of rings what do you think the significance of Windom Earle's ring was? It looks like a bit of string tied around his finger which is done to ensure you don't forget something. Maybe it was to make sure he doesn't ever let go of his grudge against Cooper for the death of his wife?
