To be fair, TCM Underground has been dog shit these last couple of years. 90% of the time they run the same old shit and rarely have anything new.

SNL only came into being because Johnny Carson was pissy about random old episodes of the Tonight Show running late on Saturday night (in part because he had no say on what episodes ran)

Also, when SNL first aired? NOTHING NOTHING NOTHING like it had ever aired.

Basically young counterculture comedians shitting on EVERYTHING, left AND right. And doing so in a way that Laugh In or other variety shows NEVER could get away with (the only show that could remotely be compared with S1-5 SNL would be the Smothers Brothers, which got killed by network censors whereas SNL got away with murder).

It can not be stressed enough, how ground breaking and taboo breaking the first five seasons of SNL were. There was NOTHING like it at the time and it created a runaway juggernaut so powerful and which made so much money for NBC, that even when the show overnight turned to shit with the sixth season, NBC could not kill it off because it was THAT FUCKING POPULAR.
