Neither is inherently superior, it depends on how the rest of the story has gone. If there is a lot of potential has been established for the MC then ultimate sacrifice feels more painful and is more difficult to reconcile. If the MC's life story feels like it could be at a natural conclusion, ultimate sacrifice makes more sense.

Though the best types of endings are "status quo remains but there's a hint of a possibility for change".
