What have I actually just watched? Are Tarkowsky's other films more straightforward?
>>
>>82964662
That is as straightforward as you are going to get.
Watch more movies.
>>
>>82964675
It felt to me that even Bergman's films were easier to understand.
>>
>>82964675
yeah, even normies understood this film, just check the ratings on IMDB or Letterboxd
OP you need to get good and appriciate good films

Not really since you are probably american and the ones around you are European immigrants so to some extent you can relate with the way of thinking.
Eastern europe in particular comblock just think differently because of environment.
Its just different, you really need to know the conditions the movie was made in and get acquainted with the day to day life here.
>>
>>82964783
I live in Eastern Europe dude. It's like expecting every Swede to understand "Persona".

Then I dont know what to tell you I guess you are too young and haven't lived through transition?
I related pretty much instantly.
>>
>>82964891
related to what? how do you explain all those millenials 'getting this' film even though they didn't live through transition as you said it
I suspect that a lot of people praise this film not because they actually liked it but because they feel that they are supposed to and they intellectualized what they've seen to add it worth
>>
>>82964934
Peeps think deep in a beautiful irradiated area and humans are prolly mutating. What's there to get?
>>
>>82964934
Look there is a lot of nuance in these movies from growing up and realizing that you belong in nature,to fighting for the daily bread in commie countries because those were the times.
I mean I need to explain the last 20 years of bullshit to even scratch the surface of messages the movie is trying to manifest.
>>
>>82964749
No they didn't. It's all just circlejerking over a popular and "iconic" movie.
>>
>>82964934
Why don't you search for analysis and explanations of this movie yourself?
>>
>>82964989
are you saying that Stalker is a story about struggle in communist countries and as extension of that about struggle as a whole - because that's just too general?
>>
>>82965016
I cant follow your sentence since not native English speaker.
But look at it this way,the movie is mash up of Roadside Picnic, directors early life(working as prspector),and the daily grind of the Russian citizen.
>>
>>82964989
i.e. It's convoluted
>>
>>82964662
Stalker is pretty straightforward, aswell as other Tarkovsky films.
What is happening on screen is what is happening, there is no hidden meaning which you have to puzzle out,

Think of it like poetry put in a visual medium.

>>
stalker is a mediocre, overlong, nonsensical film about people walking around a field. there are beautiful shots littered throughout the film, making it like an art exhibit where you have to swim through an olympic size pool filled with molasses between each piece.
>>
>It's boring and unnecessarily long so it must have a deep meaning.

There is digital remaster in the works,I think its scheduled for release really soon like in a month or so.

The remaster is already out, just not on Criterion.

And it looks absolutely magnificent
https://youtu.be/TGRDYpCmMcM

Better then any previous blu ray version by miles, even on youtube.
>>
>>82970238
Criterion blu ray is out in July.
>>
>>82972699
I know about that version,I was talking about proper Blueray release remaster version.
Someone told me about it and I forgot where I left the link.

Also Lem's Solaris is better.
This is undoubtedly true.
>>
I think the real question is why was stalked filmed in 4:3 when all his previous works had been cinema aspect ratios and why the fuck has it taken so long to release a bluray remaster when again, his previous works already have them.
>>
>>82973136
>why was stalked filmed in 4:3
Because the original master was destroyed by incompetence and the whole movie was re shot from the beginning.
That costs money.
>>
>>82966424
its about the characaters, their ideas, the greater ideas they represent
the movie doesnt have any specific answer
>>
>>82964662
as of all the tarkovsky movies I've watched (andrei rublev, solaris, stalker, the mirror and ivan's childhood) Ivan's Childhood was definitely the most straightforward

his films are too cerebral for me
>>
>>82964662
Read the novel it makes more sense.
>>
It's in theaters across the US the next few days FYI
>>
>Are Tarkowsky's other films more straightforward?
Yeah dude, check out The Mirror.
>>
You should just watch Tarkovsky's Solaris if you want a casual film.
>>
>>82975605
Just saw it in theaters on Monday, and the new restoration looks amazing.
>>
>>82975893
35mm?
>>
All of Tarkovsky's films are now on Filmstruck now btw. Was pretty surprised to see Nostalghia and The Sacrifice were added.
>>
>>82977210
Unfortunately just DCP, but being the new digital remaster it still looks great.
>>
>>82964662
you saw a masterpiece. and no, tarkowsky's goal is not to entertain the masses, but to uplift them through a revelation of truth.

So what's the difference with the Criterion? Just having possible nicer subs? Although I did hear that they did a retranslation too

Also I don't understand wtf Stalker was supposed to be about, but it's pretty and foreign and it makes me look cultured
>>
>>82977210
>>82977375
wouldn't a film version look like shit now? I was under the impression that those old films going around theaters are spliced and cut up and you're better off with a DCP anyway
>>
>>82964662

he had to keep the anti-communism banter abstract otherwise he'd be gulaged
>>
Ivan's Childhood is his most straightforward and linear film. Maybe because it's his first. But his films are very spiritual and poetic.
>>
>>82978790
watch 'go and see', it looks similar to Stalker and is a simple but beautiful story

It's a flick about faith. Also the dog is important.

Also everyone involved in location shooting died a slow horrible death (industrial waste is a hell of a drug). Also an earlier workprint shot from a different more roadside picnic-y script died in a fire so they had to reshoot it.

>inb4 it's about Communism hurr durr!
>>
>>82966424
Faith and doubting one's faith. Just like every other Tarkovsky film pretty much.
>>
>>82966424
It's about the Stalker lamenting the destruction of faith in the Soviet Union and in the rest of modern society, with the writer and professor offering two facets of mankind's social modern consciousness, and showing how futile this method of seeing the world is
>>
>>82966756
The imagery exists to be images
>>
>>82979834
even if easy they are not straightforward, are you fucking dumb?
>>
>>82980436
If it's straightforward visually, then yes it's straightforward. Fanny and Alexander being a difficult or obtuse film? Give me a break
>>
>>82977290
I must admit that I viscerally hated Tarkovsky's "Nostalgia" and completely hated the use of Beethoven in it. I've seen it only once, but none of the Tarkovsky films that I have seen did I think are really good.

>>82977501
Don't pre order it anon, it comes out the month of the B&N 50% off sale so just get it then for 19 bucks.
