Vader makes the Emperor intimidating. When you finally see the Emperor of space that this hulking cyborg monster calls master and it's just a bent old man, grinning and shrouded in a black cloak you wonder just how fucking terrifying this old man must be.
If he had to have a display of power in the prequels it should have just been an overwhelming amount of lightning, or something more force related. I know force lightning has been depicted in other Star Wars media but going back to the films it makes him feel like a scary void wizard.
