>"For the Battle of Coruscant sequence I wanted to depict a grand scale space battle with capital ships. We have seen dogfights before, but no capital ship against capital ship battles where both sides unleash their entire arsenals to decimate the enemy fleet."

>"Some people have asked me why I chose to have the ships so close to one another rather than very far away, which would be very possible and probably more reasonable considering the technology they have access to. The truth is that I wanted to capture that iconic pirate ship battle atmosphere where two ships lined up next to each other and unloaded, and I wanted to underline the defeat of a ship by making it appear to drop toward the planet, like an airplane that's been shot down. Very dramatic visuals overall."

>"Another reason for that decision is that a space battle between ships that are very far away from each other is a very boring affair. You hear the command to fire weapons. Sometime later you may or may not see a successful hit. You fire, you wait, you fire, you wait. Maybe you would see some blip on a radar screen. Very dry and calculated, much like submarine movies, which aren't known for exciting battles. It wouldn't have conveyed the tension and energy I wanted the scene to have."

Do you agree with Lucas?

Yeah

Yeah. It's more interesting when the ships are near each other.

I always just explain it away in my head that defensive technology (shields, etc) outpaced offensive tech by quite a bit, so you've gotta get close to punch through the enemies shields.
>>
>>82888523
Why would that make a difference? It's not like projectiles would slow down over greater distances.

Yeah I do. The sci-fi accuracy was never a relevant or important part of star wars, and the actual ship fighting wasn't what was wrong with that scene.

Yes of course battles like that will always be more interesting to watch, but in the end the entire sequence really was unnessesary overall
>>
Reminder that the prequels completely outclass nu star wars in every possible sense.
>>
More interesting to watch, plus Grievous was escaping so it makes sense for Republic ships to get up close and block off hyperspace jump escapes

>>82888466
The fact that the distances they shoot each other at is shorter than the length of either ship is hilarious.
>>
I actually agree on that front, star wars was never hard sci fi and was always swashbuckling adventure, Similar to SPY.

>he doesn't know space is a vacuum
>>
>>82888445
I don't know, who cares, didn't help the overall slog of a story.
>>
>>82888445
It was fine as a background/environment spectacle. I didn't care about how close they were because they weren't the real focus.

The problem was that in the one scene where we get two ships broadsiding each other, it IS the focus and it's too ridiculous. All of those turrets that we've scene on ships over the years? Yeah, turns out the actually fire power comes from highly vulnerable 17th century style cannons. Weapons like these would actually justify getting pretty close and simply passing by each other because there's no ability to maneuver and fire at the same time. But it's so stupid that when it's brought to the forefront, it's just distracting and pointless.

To me, this was more boring than the alternative. Why not do it like Battlestar Galactica?
>>
The CIS did nothing wrong.
>>
>>82889742
>putting all the guns in the same place as a wet battleship and in the sane arrangement
>leaving an entire hemisphere of angles virtually uncovered

Well, you're kind of right because Star Wars ships have been known to do this. The Imperial class Star Destroyers look awesome, but like with that anime, they are designed with two deminsions in mind like a terrestrial ship. All of the big guns are arranged on top with no central guns.
>>
>>82888607

>>
>>82888668
The fight over Coruscant didn't take place in space.
>>
>>82888445
>massive space battle happens above Coruscant
>ships getting destroyed and falling to the planet surface
>all following Coruscant scenes everyone and everything seems perfectly fine
>>
>>82888798
Every single movie in the history of mankind is unnecessary.
>>
>>82891956
>Yeah, turns out the actually fire power comes from highly vulnerable 17th century style cannons
You mean one side of the battle had ships with those cannons.
We don't see the inside of the Republic ships.
>>
>>82888445

No. This useless hack thinks too much on special effects. Babylon 5 did long range batlles interestig with some si.ple camera work. It's not that hard! He just wanted ships of sails in space!
>>
>>82892466
The difference between Star Wars and Babylon 5 is that the latter is science fiction, the former is space fantasy.
Star Wars is pretty much entirely mandated by the rule of cool.
And if you didn't think the Battle over Coruscant was cool, that's entirely your opinion for as long as you allow others to hold an opinion that differs from yours.

Again, it was perfect for an indulgent eye candy sequence. Because we weren't following any of the ships' crews, we didn't or have the time for more realistic battle sequences.

Why is there a guy sitting in a chair bolted to the cannon like a 20th century AA gun? Guns like this irl have been remote controlled since forever?

The biggest mistake they make with Star Wars is everything has to be insanely anachronistic, only because the first one was done in 1977.
>>
>>82892844
Submarine battles are exciting because normally you're with the crew inside the submarine, with few exterior shots.
Submarine battles without insight into the crew and just two submarines firing torpedoes every 20 minutes IS boring.
>>
>>82892897

>>82892210
>>
>>82893095
Exactly. They would be better if the main characters were actually participating in the capital ship battle. But because they aren't, we can only rely exterior visuals.
>>
It looks cooler but it doesnt make sense in battle.
>>
>>82893052

The first one was just as anachronistic in that aspect. Space Fighters behave like WW2 planes instead of modern planes.

The only way it would make sense is if shields cancelled each other the closer they got.
>>
>>82893416
I guess so. The galaxy was in a state of war so they may need to construct cheap ships like these as soon as possible and probably dont have any long range weapon capabilities.
>>
>>82893710
>cheap ships

Lmao, nigga a single venator could solo the entire united federation of planets fleet.
>>
>>82893765
That doesn't mean anything regarding the cost of the starships used in Star Wars.

>>

Venator are actually insanely expensive in the star wars universe.

this
>>
why are guys even arguing about how close they are. those two just happened to be really close, thats it. all the other ships have a lot of distance between them
>>
Implying sheev didn't wanted to destroy both fleets to build a new one
>>
>>82888445
Absolutely, star wars has always been about what looks better rather than what is realistic
>>
>>82888445
No, in the sense that I'm sure one could make an incredibly gripping scene of long-range spaceship combat. But I do appreciate his imagination, it's just that I think very different ones could also be well executed.
If Lucas had just focused on ideas and visuals and let other people write the screenplays again...
>>
>>82888607
Please tell me nobody is this retarded
>>
>>82891956
This too. The prequels are absurd when one considers military aspects. For example, the droid armies are completely ludicrous from a military standpoint.
But then, in this universe Jedi can deflect blaster bolts and yet nobody just tries to shoot them with lasers or bullets, so I guess a bit of military unreality is baked in.
>>
>>82888466
For cartoon network that's perfectly acceptable.
>>
>>82894517
>>82894517
what makes you think they can't deflect those?
>>
>>82888445
he si right, but science nerd have to fluant their knowledge about everything because they have nothing else so they complain about things being "unrealistic" and all the other memes as if they are the only ones that know stuff like not being sound in space etc.

desu modern carrier warfare is much more interesting than trading broadsides. plus older carrier actions are beyond legendary at this point like Taffy 3 at Samar

>escort carriers are ambushed at point blank range by a japanese taskforce that includes Yamato and two other battleships as well as 6 heavy cruisers
>the group's destroyers Samuel B. Roberts, Hoel and Heermann charge the enemy at flank speed to buy time for the carriers
>they close to within torpedo range straddled by huge 8 and 14 inch shells
>Hoel takes a direct 14 inch hit to her bridge but still manages to fire torpedoes at the Battleship Kongo
>despite losing her bridge and 3 of her 5 guns she continues to dodge shells and draw fire from the carriers until a 8 inch shell destroys her boilers
>Heerman launches torpedoes at the battlships before laying smoke and getting in a gunnery duel with the heavy cruiser Chikuma
>Samuel B. Roberts charges straight in at 29 knots exeeding her "top speed" of 24 knots by practically tearing her machinery apart
>she blows the bow off the cruiser Choktai with a torpedo spread
>she and Heerman pound Chikuma with 5 inch shells while still charging straight at the enemy
>Samuel B. Roberts gets close enough to bring her 20mm AA guns to bear on Chikuma while her 5 inch guns destroy the cruiser's bridge and aft turret
>she keeps this up firing 600 5 inch shells until she is hit by a full 14 inch broadside from Kongo

>meanwhile the carriers clear the decks launching every plane even though only a few have torpedoes or anti-shipping bombs
>the american aircraft attack with bombs, torpedoes, depth charges, machine guns and service revolvers destoying two cruisers and damaging the rest
>once they expend their ammo they continue to launch fake attack runs through a wall of AAA to take heat off their buddies
>the carrier White Sand fires her 5 inch gun at Choktai
>the shell hits Choktai's torpedoes destroying the entire ship with all hands in a massive magazine explosion
