Pans labyrinth used some pretty good practical effects even though there was tons of cgi. For 20 years I think Starship Troopers held up well, they used a lot of puppets and models for the aliens and ships. There is a lot of cgi but I feel it's aged well because of the use of practical effects. Blade Runner and Alien and pretty much any pre 1995 sci fi that's mentioned here favorably might suit you.

A Monster Calls had more practical effects than I thought after seeing the making of. If you like GDT you sl Gould dig it.

Gremlins is the best practical effects movie ever created.

The motherfuckin transformation scene in An American Werewolf in London, you know the one. A great movie, too. If you haven't seen it before Anon, you should.

Even Ghosts of Mars? Or maybe that was just a shit movie

But you are right about most of his movies, The Thing, They Live, Vampires (which as a kid I thought was badass)

As much as the first 2 hours bored me, in Titanic, James Cameron made excellent use of miniatures, real sets, and costumes. I think his success was he used CGI to complement practical effects and not as the basis for all the effects.

Same idea with Jurassic Park.

Freaked (1993) has some fun monster make-up.

Dog Soldiers
Underworld (only the first one)
Hellboy 1 and 2
Virtually all Batman movies
Evil Dead series
The Fly
Star Wars 4-6
American Werewolf in London
Tron (most of the movie was filmed in black and white, then color was added frame by frame to achieve the effect)
Wizard of Oz
Lord of the Rings
First two Harry Potter films (half the scenes with the basilisk are a huge animatronic snake.
Honorable mention: Minority report (it's about 50/50 for practical vs cgi, but it looks pretty good)
