I can see this bizarre totalitarian society growing out of some almost Children of Men esque post apocalyptic setting, or maybe something resembling 70s Iran, but the flashbacks to this completely normal looking modern society just aren't very convincing. You have to do a lot of mental gymnastics for Gilead to make any sense.
