Fun fact: Ronnie was supposed to be revealed to be bisexual in season seven. But they cut the storyline (along with the reveal about his backstory) when they had to rewrite the season due to issues with scheduling issues for several actors critical for the original season seven arc.

This show got off to a weird start.

The murder of Terry in the pilot is one of those "Holy Shit" moments that basically made the show a huge deal.

When it was first announced/commercials airing prior to the series premiering on TV, there were ZERO expectations for it being any good.

Basically Michael Chiklis as a dirty cop? The himbo from Homicide as the main male lead?

NO ONE expected The Shield to be any good. NO ONE.

Vic killing Terry was one of those TV milestone moments that basically gets no love in so far as the fact that NO ONE saw it coming. PERIOD.

And this was back when pretty much all "edgy" cop shows basically had a strict formula where no one ever does something as "Captain Sensible" and where all "cowboy cops" like Vic end up reforming or get brought down.

Also, props for the show never trying to retroactively make Terry a shit in order to make the murder justified. One of the reasons why "Low Winter Sun" was such a shitty rip off of Shield, was that not only did they rip off the murder of Terry for it's pilot, but then did what Shawn Ryan refused to do, and made Mark Strong's murder of the fellow cop justified in terms of revealing that the guy was pure evil.

That said, The Shield was a show that thankfully was pre-Tumblr and remained untouched by the taint of SJW fandom. I remember Television Without Pity constantly refused to recap it, which the Shield thread/forum on the website's message board took as a source of pride, given how bad TWOP was.

A reboot of The Shield would be interesting, but only if you do it as an animated series.

I'd probably make Ronnie gay/merge his character with Julian, since the actor that played Julian was a shit and use him as a POV character. They could work in some of Ronnie's character beats (like him getting disfigured) to replace some of the cringe-worthy aspects of Julian's storylines (like the pray the gay away arc) and make Ronnie's eventual arrest at the end all the more powerful in terms of Ronnie being seduced to the dark side by Vic and be rewarded for his loyalty by being betrayed.

Also, they can work around Claudette's schizo character motivations early on and introduce Mara and Billings into the series earlier on so their introductions don't seem so forced out of the blue.

The problem with making Shane gay is that, the entire Shane/Vic relationship is one big problematic abusive relationship. The sort of toxic abusive relationships that they make Lifetime movies about.

Ronnie being gay/having an unrequited crush on Vic would make more sense. Especially with Shane dropping truth bombs like he did in season six about how Vic killed Terry and isn't as innocent as he appears to be.

If they had to race/genderswap characters, I could actually see Vic being turned black or hispanic/Acaveda being swapped and turned white. Because a lot of their dynamic could never work today (IE how Acaveda spends the first three seasons being shitted on and in season three, sexually assaulted) in terms of people not liking an uppity white cop of questionable morals mocking the authority of a clean cut (if not slightly amoral) hispanic police captain, who's only sin is expecting his officers to follow the rules.

Alternatively, they could swap Tina out with a white guy for the running gag notion that Tina is lazy and manipulative in an office politics sort of way, but competent enough on duty that Claudette and Danny can't get her fired.

Was Television Without Pity ever really good?

I went there a couple of times but the website was a mess of pretensions shits with recaps that refused to refer to the characters by their actual names (like them only referencing one character on Rome with the name from a character from The OC) or were a bunch of post-modern English major jargon circle jerk bullshit like Battlestar Galactica or Dr Who's recaps, which barely focused at all on the plot and more on the writer rambling on about "The Hero's Journey" and other obscure reference bullshit.....

TWOP was a mixed bag.

Some recaps were legit good but some were legit bad. In general, (Rome aside) HBO shows and reality TV shows tended to be decent (especially MTV reality TV shows) in terms of the reality TV recaps having good level of snark to them while the HBO recaps, were written well because they were a huge bread and butter page-view wise, since back then you had a lot of people who wanted to follow the HBO shows but were too poor or lived at college and couldn't get HBO. Especially since this was before streaming and when video file sharing was still a royal pain in the ass in term of hard to do in terms of finding shit.

But anything written by Jacob was dog shit and there was blatant favoritism with regards to TWOP playing favorites with what shows got recapped and which ones didn't. FX in particular, they had it out for and only a rare handful of shows got recapped (and even then, for like a single season before they were dropped) and shows like Shield and Nip/Tuck It's Always Sunny, crapped upon by the website in terms of "We will never recap these shows because we hate them"; to the point that the Recap FAQ for Charmed (which had an actor from Nip/Tuck as one of the main villains) explicitly stated "We hate Nip/Tuck so stop asking us if we are going to recap" listed in it.

If they did a reboot, they could make it a period piece set in late 90s LA. Which was around the time the RAMPART scandal (which Shield is based upon) played out in real life.

Which would also allow them to make Vic black since the cop who was in charge of the corrupt RAMPART squad was also black.

Cool visual, vague characteristics that set them apart from the main characters, plus the fact that they are always in the background making people wondering about their POV for the craziness around them.

As for the gay fanbase thing, it's the mustache. Basically made David Rees Snell eye candy gay viewers, as far as making him stand out. The actor even has stated that no one would have cared about his character in the beginning if not for his decision to have facial hair.

Ronnie was the normal one and that made him someone fans could relate to. And given that he gets disfigured and spends the bulk of the series in the dark about Vic killing Terry, there were storyline elements to be had that fans wanted to see fleshed out as opposed to watching Shane/Vic/Mara engage in a poor man's bisexual soap opera....

The funny thing about Ronnie is that even though he was popular, the writers never pandered with him to the viewers.

Then again, the Ronnie fans tend to be pretty lucid compared to some background character fandoms. The character's fans tend to accept his downer ending/acknowledge that he was asking for it in the end.
