The best Dredd movie is and always will be the original RoboCop.

RoboCop > Demolition Man > Dredd 2000's > Dredd 1990's

90's had a more charismatic star and a bigger budget, which also means better production value and a style closer to RoboCop with its ran down smoke-filled dark alleys, etc. it feels more dirty and grand, but suffered heavily from being directed by a hack and studio wanting it to be children-friendly. Demolition Man has an equally charismatic Stallone, but with better aesthetics and actual dystopian satire, although it's still no Verhoeven and also lacks harder action.

2000's suffers from its small budget and limited scope -- which is also its greatest strength, it's a small story perfectly executed, with some decent style and obvious creative freedom which means it's never insultingly dumbed-down. However it leaves you wanting more and it's regrettable that the same team couldn't get a big budget to do a proper Dredd movie with a bigger scope. The problem is its also lacking any kind of political subtext. A proper Dredd flick with proper Dredd themes couldn't be made in the current political climate and era of Disney PC pandering capeshit as it would 1. be labeled far-right. 2. not be profitable enough to be made the way it should be made with hard R and creative freedom

RoboCop being made at all is a fucking miracle when you think about it, someone gave a blank check to this madman Verhoeven and he did it right, so be thankful it exists

Dredd is objectively superior and captures the grit from the comics.

Unfortunately it loses the bombastic style (which the Stallone one had, including the "proper" costume) and comedy elements.

I'm not sure you can do both. You have to go very dark satire. Robocop levels. Very hard to get right. If you do the visual elements like the uniform it'll look campy almost instantly.

The original Judge Dredd was taking 2000 AD and hollywoodizing it with a chechlist of market tested and approved plotlines. Dredd was a raid style gritty and realistic version of the comic with better everything. Aside from the visuals which the first movie has because they actually adapted the comic visually.

Well, I saw both movies, and the 2012 guy wasn't as charismatic. I don't know why I need to know his name. I appreciate that he wasn't exactly given the same opportunities, given that he had to keep the mask on the whole time.

I also am not saying it's worse because it's a different genre. They're both action movies. 2012 Dredd just bought into the obnoxious 2010s trend of "action movie" meaning "endless action" scene. Original Dredd had better pacing, twists (even though they were dumb), and the action felt more meaningful as a result.

Absolutely not over used. The last scene it's used in is uncomfortably long way. I assumed that's what the director wanted it to feel like when watching the death of someone in slow mo.
