>They're still sending stupid people to space

>THEY STILL DON'T WEAR HELMETS AND LAND ON ALIEN PLANETS FOR THE MOST STUPID OF REASONS
>It's more of a B-movie tier with high budget, kinda like Ghosts of Mars minus Ice Cube

I don't know what I was expecting
>>
Helmets doesnt works against a facehugger.

Have you forgot Brett from Alien, he had a helmet?
>>
>>82718287
Too bad there aren't facehuggers in this movie until David engineered it and tried it near the end

You know, it could have been an actual plot point of why the facehugger is a better carrier than a aerobe strain, or why he designed the facehugger that way/why it mutated to be that way.

Or better yet, they could have said the planet they landed could have been an already terraformed lost colony of early years since it seems it's more possible to embark to explore deep space now. That would have fixed (sloppily) but somehow fixed why they're NOT wearing Hazmat suits or don't seem to feel the need for.

But no.
>>
Normies don't like helmets.
>>
This really irked me too.
Just land on a bizarre planet and go thrashing through the bush and vegetation without considering a single hazard.
The New Zealand native bush really broke it for me though.
>>
>There are flesh eating virus already on Earth

>They still don't wear helmets on alien planets

I have been defending this movie but yeah I can't with this point. It was just too ridiculous for me.

Im sure Ridley is just fucking with the fans, I refuse to believe he's this dumb. The movie can still work almost the same if they wore helmets
>>
>>82719260
he sorta trusted him. sorta.

"something to see?" line was creepy.

they should have left the planet the minute that woman commented on how there were no animal noises.

what? this has never happened in Alien.

Why didn't they shoot the rogue synth when they were escaping the building and saw them fighting?

He comes across like someone just walked up to him in a pub and said 'let's make movies, I'll pay, you direct!'.

fucking usher was doing some random shit near me near the end of the film and kind of ruined my concentration near the end of the film

so please help me with something i i think i missed

what tell did david give the girly that it was him and not walter when he was putting her in cryo sleep?

also

didnt walter take an embryo at the start of the film? he picked one out but did he replace it?

becasue later david is seen placing alien specimens in the same containment unit. which made me think maybe it was the same samples being put back but with an alien, maybe leading to more evidence that walter turned into david or some shit.

clues that i picked up that it was david

I was hoping that David would be the Xeno "King", like that he had tamed them, ordering them around.
That was the impression I got from the movie poster, I guess.
Alien: Awakening then?
>>
>>82723483
I relate to this pure autism.

she asks "Walter" if he'll help her build her log cabin by the lake.

David wasn't around during that conversation and has no idea wtf she's talking about so he looks confused.

That's when she realises.

>didnt walter take an embryo at the start of the film? he picked one out but did he replace it?
he just checked it. he put it back.
>>
>>82721526
He smiles and people already figured out the twist like 7 minutes earlier
>>
>>82723987
>>82721526
I wish I could place a bet on this. I remember him not smiling and thought to myself "if he smiles then he's DEFINITELY David"... but never saw it.
>>
>>82723801
my guess is that beard man was terrible pilot.
the rig was very heavy, remember them saying that they put a lot of plasma in the engines so it could get back.
also they did extend the crane that made it unstable.
>>
>>82724038

its the ever so slight smirk, a subtle smug look, other times when it cuts back he looks more intrigued
>>
>>82723911
>the pacing in the last scene was terrible
the editing and cinematography in this was dire. crushed blacks everywhere. pasty grey color palette. action takes place mostly at night. except for the generic ship design there was no visual panache at all.

the "action" is so rushed that it barely feels significant. she uses a harness and swings around a ship and uses a giant crane in the space of like two minutes and you're like "oh ok. that happened I guess."
>>
>>82724122

ah yh you are right, there is a line that explains the crane instability now i that i think of it
>>
>>82724122
>A ship that large with 2000 colonists on board

David didn't create xenos. he created the black drone xeno.

the black goo can turn anything into a xeno and likely has done for thousands of years before Prometheus. You see a white xeno in Prometheus that comes out of an Engineer and was sourced from Shaw.
>>
>>82717865
in the universe of Alien where interstellar travel is a casual thing, you're not going to be paranoid enough to wear helmets on a planet that has the EXACT SAME atmosphere as earth. And because of the beacon, they already knew that there was human life on that planet.

>>
>>82724424
Black Goo contained Xeno's DNA.

Engineers created Black Goo.

Therefore, Engineers knew about Xeno before David did.

David wanted to re-create the original Xeno, because Weyland wished him to create the perfect organism. Therefore, he reverse engineered Black Goo to create the original Xeno.

How hard is this?

from what i understand the black shit creates the neomorphs.
david said that even when infecting smaller animals the end result up the food chain would be a neomorph.
David showed jesus-guy that the black shit had altered an insect to infected larger animals. and we got to see different types of neomorph abomination skulls, probably animals that had been infected, but in the end a pure neomorph would emerge
what david did was to experiment, probably with different combinations to end up with our classic xenomorph.

xenos can probably form without humans. We haven't seen the evolution tree to get there.

if the goo can infect a worm to get a xenosnake (Hammerpede), which in turn infects a host to get a xeno... it's likely the goo can infect anything and keep climbing up the food chain until it resembles a drone or neomorph.

David was clearly acting alone when he arrived to that planet, so I thought Shaw was long dead/handcuffed by that point. No way she would have sanctioned such attack.

When it was its own film I liked it a lot. Autistic robots were great, cheesy evil David reveal was satisfying. When no-charisma-what's-her-name-again was spouting 'MOTHERFUCKER' and doing what is now apparently xeno-protocol 101 (use a crane, burn them, lure them into an airlock) it sucked.

just made me think of another

>>82720394

when backup captain wakes up from getting face hugged he mistakes david for walter, foreshadowing the later mistaken identity

desu i guess having the same actor play the droids pretty much set up this "plot twist"

its hardly much of a twist tho, given that its the sort of story line youd expect from something like sister sister, south park already did it

makes me wander what really did happen offscreen, there was clearly no way david could beat walter in a fight being his inferior

>>82727454

in the film its discussed that the virus thing only affects biological organisms, it would be a major shift away from this established concept if this happened

to be honest, the androids are a big enough menace without becoming hybridised, they already lack humanity which is a trait they have in common with the xeno.

isnt there a line in the film, in conversation between walter and david, where it is suggested that all android have nefarious clandestine role in their assigned crews. perhaps a droid is assigned to crews to carry out certain tasks that would be compromised by a persons humanity, this makes me further wander what happened after the droid fight

david has now been established as the biggest threat in the whole franchise, being the master of the titular menace and even being guilty of genocide

altho perhaps if david and the xeno are perfect, perhaps hybridisation from his point of view would be desirable
>>

I think the black goo it's simply a sort of clay, to shape lifeforms.
It goes in overdrive as soon as it makes contact with another living organism and begins creating or altering it into a new one.

The "Angel" daecon from Prometheus was just a by product of experimentaiton with such clay.

The black goo, the very existence of the xenomorphs, was created long in the ancient past by the engineers.

David did not create the xenomorphs himself; David and the rest of the Prometheus crew discovered the xenomorphs on the engineer ship. He and Shaw stole the engineer ship and drove to the engineers' planet - the planet in Alien Covenant.

After he killed all the engineers, David spent 10 years experimenting with and genetically modifying the black goo in order to create different breeds of xeno. He merely changed what he found; he did not create them.

riddley scott doesnt fucking remember what made the original movie so special, how mundane and incidental it would be.

Since that can't be done again, he basically just mixed some Blade Runner themes with some tacky teenage-level philosophy about life and religion. Meanwhile he explains what the Alien fucking is, defeating the purpose of it being an ALIEN, a monster you should not be able to understand.

Just make Alien about what it is, biomechanical dicks, sodomy and the devil. And take it away from senile riddley.

>>
>>82719539
Yes it has. Ripley had a kid at home that she was planning on returning to. The nostromo escape pod was lost in space for 60 years.
In aliens they lost contact with the colony, and by the time the colonial marines get there they find cocooned humans who havent been chestbursted yes, and more importantly newt is still a kid that hasn't aged since since we see her and her brother in the DC in the crawler when they discover the space jockey ship.

>>
>>82738794

>>No David didnt create the Xeno's hes just using the knowledge he learnt from his years aboard the Engineer ship to reverse engineer them from the black goo.

Why even bother though?

As it stands the black goo by itself is deadly enough and releasing it effectively wipes out an entire ecosystem. You can't even walk around in that environment since goo particles will fuck you up from the inside.

And creating "the perfect organism" is retarded as well since the xenos just exist as eggs and predatory animals basically and nothing else.

Not only that but the goo>human>monster cycle is faster than the egg>human>xeno cycle too... so all his gene-dicking around did is diminish the potency of the weapon.

None of it makes any sense.

>>82739536
You can blame Cameron for that, while I love Aliens to death it did ruin the mystique of the xenomorph.
After all the original script for Alien had the xenomorph kill ripley and then sit down and finish writing the message home (Fox told Ridley to fuck off with that shit)
we got a faint level of this in the form of "they cut the power"

the question I wish Covenant would have answered instead of the xenomorphs origins was: Just how smart are xenomorphs? We've only ever seen them with a couple of months to learn the soroundings (so figuring that you can cut the power and use an elevator in that short timespan is actually rather impressive)

Can you imagine Xenomorph scientists reverse engineering how to build spaceships and stuff?
>>
How long until the prequel sequel to this comes out? It really annoys me that Ridley didnt make that first.

Why did they choose Daniels as the main protagonist instead of Dr Shaw is beyond me. Why establish a bunch of new characters we know nothing about when we have Shaw? It's a fucking franchise, people saw the previous films. They don't explain Darth Vader again in TFA and R:1.

This would be a much better movie if Shaw was hiding somewhere on the planet, sending a distress call the Covenant would pick up and they would send two a rescue crew for her and another science crew to investigate the ship from Prometheus. Shawn would tell the rescue crew all about David going crazy, the science crew would be in danger, Daniels in one crew, James Franco in another, she would want to save him etc.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the crazy old man Ridley indicate that his next Prometheus/Alien project was explaining the second chapter?

What we are seeing is part 3 now but he was going to create part 2 later.

I might be wrong or he might be senile.

Don't you see?
The larval stage is necessary so it's harder to kil. This will all be explained in the 5th prequel
>>

Apparently there's going to be an interquel called Alien: Awakening, and then a final prequel called Alien: Paradise.

Then I guess Ridley will be free to go on his tangent War of the Worlds shit.

I think you're thinking about it wrong.

You got to realize this bioweapon meme came about in the 1980s and you need to understand the contextual culture that would create such a narrative device. Governments looking for the next troaping weapon to render their opponents arsenal null and void. It is generally assumed no one really wants to nuke. If that's the case we'd see one be used fairly regularly between nations and when has that happened? So this is the next best weapon verse a nuke. Also I can sell this dangerous thing to the government for a fat contract.

I kinda got of the rails but I think I explained my point.

I had heard that script-wise David ran tests on Shaw / Shaw's body. So either she died indirectly of David or David tainted her with the black goo some time while in status.

Cause the alien would've probably fucked with his new 2k test subjects that are all at his mercy now, except for some miracle (like another deep space incident that will cause all the colonists to wake up due to some security protocol).

The film becomes a lot more enjoyable if seen for what it is: The Continuing Adventures of a Schizo Robot
>yfw David's ruse cruise
>>
>>82727250
Just saw this movie today and parts of David's dialogue and motivation still baffles me.

1. So why exactly did David kill Shaw? If he cared for her so much to construct a memorial for her, why murder her so brutally?
2. Did David have sex with Shaw or not? At that point of the movie it won't be surprising if he did, but then why would he even ask Daniels whether he's imitating human copulation properly?
3. On that note, what's the significance of David mis-attributing Ozymandias to Byron?

So is David simply so idiosyncratic that his obsession with creation drove him to engineer a lifeform in his perferred image? And what is Shaw to him in all of this?

Do lorefags realize how retarded they are for expecting a developed lore from Scott AND hating James Cameron?
Cameron is one of you. He's an autist who still play with action figure. He's obsessed with lore when he makes a movie.

Didnt understand how they killed the xenomorph that came out of Cudrup and what happenned to shaw, also the thing from prometheus and the other aliens are like an inferior xenomorph right? And why do the plants have aliens on them?? Some shit is unexplained..
>>
>>82745920
>3. On that note, what's the significance of David mis-attributing Ozymandias to Byron?
maybe to show that david the creator of the creatures will ultimately be forgotten even if his creatures live on, although im not really sure, that part confused me

>they still don't wear helmets

Goddammit, this was so fucking annoying in Prometheus. I don't care if you can breathe, it's a goddamn alien planet with weird alien bacteria.

I understand why they did it, because they wanted the audience to clearly see their faces, but it's still dumb.
>>

Star Trek.

>>
>>82745920
It's their way of "subtly" hinting that something was wrong with David. A properly-functioning machine wouldn't mis-remember things.

I enjoyed this movie.

The helmets issue was a bit of a plot hole and kind of annoying.

The colonisation has to continue even with mishaps. We still make Nuclear bombs and Nuclear plants knowing full well how dangerous they are, because science.

>1. So why exactly did David kill Shaw? If he cared for her so much to construct a memorial for her, why murder her so brutally?
She was the mother of his children. He was aping human behaviour and sentiment has he was programmed to do.

>2. Did David have sex with Shaw or not? At that point of the movie it won't be surprising if he did, but then why would he even ask Daniels whether he's imitating human copulation properly?
As above, he's designed to try and be like humans. He wants to be a real boy but at the same time sees humans as pitiful and worthy of extinction.

>3. On that note, what's the significance of David mis-attributing Ozymandias to Byron?
He's a flawed creation created by humans who are another flawed creation.

Point 3 effectively explains why the Engineer ripped Davids head off. Humans are the Engineers version of David. Creepy flawed things that need to be stopped before they create more creepy flawed things.

Sure, but in general wearing a helmet makes sense because you have no idea what kind of diseases are on this alien planet and we have no way of being immune to it.
>>
>>82746513
Defo a plot hole.
>>
>>82746261
It's been a while, but I don't remember David being all that "off", relatively speaking, in the last film. From what I remember, he was just following Weyland's insane directives.

Hope there's a clear rip or something soon, so I can watch both Prometheus and this back-to-back.

his is not the Martian its a silly space flick about killer monsters on distant moons.

even here on earth people wear masks when entering old homes, why would it be so lax on a alien planet?

this movie was unsatisfying on so many levels

>neomorphs are fundamentally just a recoloured version of the black alien species, they dont seem to have much weaknesses or inferiority to the black one despite being "prototypes" of the final product

>despite both these aliens being predecessors to the OT aliens, they develop at near instant speeds, 10x faster than their evolutions--why?

>every human here is overtly emotional, retarded, forgettable except the main butch

>no exploration of the engineers (so do they have the same attitudes towards humans as the engineer that Shaw met? what was their motive for creating the black goo? why dont they have fucking airport security, cargo scanning or quarantine protocols? a fucking lost ship from hundreds/thousands of years ago mysteriously comes back and they just crowd around to welcome it?)

>what was David's motive? why is he like that?

Aliens being created by fucking david is such a shitty development, part of the beauty of Aliens is that they had a mystery and mystique to their origin, but now we know they are just the science fair project of an emo android

Another clue is that Walters hand is melted off leaving a rounded stump, but it is a clean cut when David replaces him.

It's hinted at in the dialogue between David and Walter.

Davids "tune" is a bit off and it is now cascading and the "whole symphony" is coming undone.
