Why can't we have sword or fantasy epics anymore nowadays? Everything is capeshit. And no, Wonder Woman doesn't count.

My dream is a mini-series of Virgil's Aeneid, hope to stay alive until the day a decent adaption is done.
>The Trojan women set fire to their ships in an effort to end years of wandering after the fall of Troy. The clouds and rain in the distance presage the storm sent by Jupiter at Aeneas’s request to quench the blaze. Claude noted in his Liber Veritatis that the picture was painted in Rome for Girolamo Farnese. The learned prelate, who returned to the city in 1643, must have chosen this episode from Virgil’s Aeneid (V:604–95) to allude to his years of itinerant service as papal nuncio combating Calvinism in remote Alpine cantons of the Swiss Confederation

Western audiences are not ready to accept fantasy as a legitimate genre with the exception of Lord of the Rings (due to its literary importance and acceptance in the academic community) and Game of Thrones (because it appeals to debase normie appetites).
Fantasy as a genre is associated with dice-rolling virgins and flowery writing. If you look at Warcraft, a film that I enjoyed despite some flaws, you notice it takes itself quite seriously and many practitioners of the world-building and speculative fiction-writing craft do as well.
American audiences, especially now as the country is 40% non-white, do not take fantasy and sci-fi seriously and if the tone isn't comedic and the dialogue not filled with quips and memes then they'll just think its stupid and not appreciate the imagination behind it.

How can white women compete?

the actual answer is because it isn't in right now, as aren't many film genres. fantasy epics were never really 'in' and were always sort of hit-and-miss

If you don't think changing demographics is having an affect on movies you should go look up the stats on those Fast and Furious movies

The genre itself is amazingly open to new alternatives and povs, but normies have western dragons as DEFINITIVE DRAGONS, basically fantasy archetype runs for so long, they could as well be fantasy definitypes now.
Also Lord of the Ring set the bar too high.
Because it's a fairly rigid format that's played out as fuck.
Game of throne is popular as fuck.

They're expensive.
If you want to make a scifi you just need some corridors and green screens.
Fantasy requires different locales, more extras and what not, vastly increasing costs.
