>Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur is not off to a royal start. Current weekend estimates from matinee figures show an industry forecast of $6 million for today, and $16.7M for the weekend, which is a lot of red ink for both Warner Bros and Village Roadshow, who’ve spent a combined $175M before P&A on this noisy disaster.

>$175 MILLION DOLLAR BUDGET

King Arthur is precisely what Quentin Tarantino could not do with American history in Django Unchained and The Hateful Eight . When Arthur rescues a boy who has witnessed his father’s brutalization by the evil usurper Vortigern (Jude Law), the montage connecting savagery, screaming, silence, and escape specifically improves on the carnage of Reservoir Dogs . Tarantino’s sheer sadism lacks the sexy, game-playing frivolity of Ritchie’s violent jamborees. King Arthur ranks with Ritchie’s best antic japes.
Arthur’s first use of the sword Excalibur might be the best battle scene in any Arthurian movie since Boorman’s — the sword vanquishes but it also vibrates, endowing its bearer with obligation. This weightiness refines Arthur’s rascality. There’s a natural resemblance to young Prince Hal carousing with Falstaff, just as Orson Welles dramatized in Chimes at Midnight . This appreciation of wild youth incubating in the British monarchy is key to Ritchie’s instinct that lad culture is connected to a Tory heritage — reminiscent of Bryan Ferry’s cover image for Roxy Music’s timeless, chivalrous make-out album Avalon . All that, plus Hunnam — with his chin-up, goateed, regal profile — knows how to wear a crown.

every adaptation of king athur has been shit, from the amateur actors in lancelot du lac to the garbage high school stage production sets in perceval le gallois (pic related), to the trash ADR, goofy overacting, and godawful production design of excalibur, to the braindead script and faux-historical wankery of the 2004 embarrassment. first knight was pure 90s faggotry, mists of avalon was feminist tripe, and every tv attempt from the CW-esque teen drama of merlin (lol black guinevere) to twink arthur and bored-out-of-her-mind eva green in camelot.

nobody will ever even attempt a late antiquity, us-against-the-coming-darkness, maille-and-spatha, cornwall-heavy adaptation that actually captures the mystique of the early legends. shit, i'd take a low-budget adaptation of relevant parts of the mabinogion. surely there's some welsh historical preservation grant money lying around for just such a purpose.

As a fan of King Arthur story, I was interested in watching this movie. Watched the trailer which was a bit cringy but okay until one scene where it showed a black man.

I was a little confused at first why there is a black man in the King Arthur story so I decided to look it up and it turns out that black man is Bedivere, I had to double take to make sure I wasn't mistaking something but it was true, they made Bedivere a black man.

I wish people would just keep their politics out of movies and stop trying to change things to their agenda.

Its bad enough when Fate made him into a girl but now hollywood is ruining the character. So I will NOT be going to see King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

Never forget that a certain creatively bankrupt company on a live-action remake spree has a vested interest in all King Arthur adaptations failing.

I said commercial successes, with no comment on the quality of the films. First Knight made I think triple its budget in the US alone? All four of the movies I mentioned turned substantial profits, where as every Arthur movie I can think of that was some weird fucked up VISION of the mythology has lost money.

That final fight scene when he is teleported to that circular altar and Vortigern delivers one line before they just start fighting was great. Felt like the final boss fight of a game where they put in barely any dialogue because they know its gonna take a bunch of tries.

>Will the Charlie "WEGUDDAGETOUTTADUNZ" Hunnam is a leading man meme finally be over now?

He is just an actor, none of the reviews have had anything bad to say about the actors, it's the direction that gets slammed.

If anything, Hunnam and always based Jude Law is the little saving grace this movie has.

Guy Ritchie will probably never direct a big budget movie again, it's not as if Man from U.N.C.L.E did well either.

I'm guessing Ritchie's 'Aladdin' movie project will be put on hold, and than the planned 'Sherlock Holmes 3' will be dropped or tied to a different director.

Unless of course, China totally saves this movie....
>>
>>82696675

underrated
>>
>>82705646

Pretty much what I said, in some myths the sword is just that, it has no special name, it's later on Arthur gets into a fight with a knight and it gets broken but before he can smite Arthur Merlin casts a sleep spell on him and tells Arthur not to to kill him, then the two of them go to the lake and recover Excalibur from there.

one part of the myth very few movies cover is when Merlin asks Arthur which is more valuable, the sword or the scabbard and Arthur chooses the sword, Merlin shaking his head saying that had he chosen the scabbard he would never bleed from any wound no matter how grievous, yet choosing the sword he will never lose a battle.

Myths, whaddaygonnado
>>
>>82708345
>Unless of course, China totally saves this movie....

semi-Historical fantasy epic with CG battles? Could happen
>>
>>82708429
>he chosen the scabbard he would never bleed from any wound no matter how grievous, yet choosing the sword he will never lose a battle.

Surely it's more important for a king to never lose a battle than to lose some but never bleed from them.

Why would he shake his head to that? What good is a king that cannot lead an army to victory? Worse yet, what is the point of one that has the gall to send men in to die for him knowing full when he will not shed blood that day on that battlefield.
>>
Would've been better if they didn't title it "King Arthur". Does anybody even know who the fuck King Arthur was in history? And it was so long ago in a pretty boring time period.

Gut reaction from the masses is 'eh whatever'. They lost tens of millions on the title alone. If they gave it an exciting name like, "Glory" or "For Honor" or something it would've made a lot more.

The actor does piss me off though with that fake cocksure attitude.
>>
>>82708546
Um Glory is already a movie. And isn't For Honor a video game?

And remember that this movie was meant to be part of some six movie avengers-type franchise.
>>
>>82708529

Well probably because in choosing the sword he knows Arthur will triumph over Mordred but ultimately die but if he had chosen differently he could still have won and lived.
>>
>>82708630
Neither of the points you said refute my logic that it was a shitty title. And For Honor made an assload of money on the manliness and 'woooo medical combat!!' Alone, who cares, hell you could ride on the wave of the success of that game, it certainly wouldn't hurt the marketing. Remember zombies?

Nice ad hominem though, I guess I'm talking to a genius. Do you have any other prolific thoughts to add to this discussion or are you just going to complain.
>>
>>82708741
>if he had chosen differently he could still have won and lived

But could he have though? To me, if his victory wasn't magically guaranteed I'm not sure how he could possibly have defeated Mordred.
>>
>>82696661

>>82708790

Dropped.
>>
>>82708827
Literally didn't say that. Reread. I alluded that the title matters massively in today's spoonfed ADHD population. And King Arthur was a blunder, there are literally an infinite number of titles to choose from. Then again I'm on 4chan and /tv/ of all places so I guess I'll just leave this is pointless.

I saw a rough cut in January and I really liked the way Guy Ritchie handled Arthur's bisexuality. I'm by no means a gay rights sjw or anything, but having that present in the movie really adds tension to the scenes with Jude Law, especially the bathing scene(s).
