It started out as family guy 2.0, only with politics, basically McFarlane and his sister talking about whatever their pet cause was in any given week. Then Family Guy really took off, and McFarlane abandoned American Dad for it. American Dad, not coincidentally, got good, had 4 or 5 great seasons, then declined again.

Because it's actually a sitcom, a situation comedy. Family Guy relies on cutaway gags that have no bearing and anything. Jokes in American Dad follow from and flow with the plot.

It's about as similar to Family Guy as it is to the Simpsons, King of the Hill, and Bob's burgers -- animated comedy about a family, but the humor isn't like family guy.

The lead is one of the most competent characters in the show, doesn't use flashbacks, is lighter than most on the "everyone resolves their differences at the end in a feel good moment" formula, doesn't resort to topical humor, and has a neat quirk of background characters frequently espousing life stories in the midst of the central conflict mocking the whole "The world revolving around the main characters" thing.

It's great at satirizing itself in subtle self-awareness without actually breaking the 4th wall unlike Family Guy which is anything but subtle.
