Watch Blue Velvet. It's the one most like Twin Peaks, since it was the movie he made just before it. It even has Kyle MacLachlan investigating a mystery as the main plot, though in a somewhat different context. It's basically the prototype for suspiciously normal surface and mysterious, dark underground that lynch tends to do later on, though it doesn't have any unreal segments in it. You can watch whatever you want after that, but remember that lost Highway and Mulholland Drive go together
