am I the only one who unironically thinks tony was a great father? sure he was questionable as a person but he was always great to his children. even though aj was a total failure he showed him love instead of being distant and cold. the worst thing he did was attack meadow for dating a mulignan.

>the worst thing he did was attack meadow for dating a mulignan.
It was the best thing he did.
>>
He warned Meadow not to fuck niggers.
He's a great dad in my book
>>
>>82611811
>sure he was a questionable person

can't you read? I'm talking about how he treated his children
>>
>100% whitewashed Black Jew

I can't imagine a more insufferable person.
>>
>>82611756
He didn't discipline his kids at all, so they became spoiled little shits.
>>
>>82611934
He was over-compensating and it's questionable whether he really loved them or just played the expected role.
As for AJ there are moments in which it is clear that Tony despises him.
>>
Providing material goods and a shelter isn't being a good father. His some became a faggot and his daughter was a race mixing liberal faggot, his children were shit and it's because he spent 90% of the time at a strip club
>>
>>82611756
>aj was a total failure
because of his fathering and constantly lying.
>>
He never taught them the value of a dollar then got mad at them for being spoilt.
>>
Well, Meadow sure looks like on the path of doing something nice out of herself (lawyer?) and AJ is going to pilot Trump and make kino, so yeah, I say things turned out breddy good.

they wouldn't even be able to film that in an hbo series these days; tony would give him and meadow their own matching ferraris for being so brave and making the soprano family so proud

What did Tony actually do in the series that you think is being a good father? All I remember is one episode where he drove his daughter around to colleges. Pretty standard fathering activity. He was going to throw his son into a military academy. Should have gone through with it, it would have been a good substitute in his absence, as a father
>>
>>82612389
>he drove his daughter around to colleges
And constantly lied to her while he killed a dude. Not that I disagree with you.
>>
>>82612046
he actually went out of his way to spend times with his kids, it's not like you have to spend every free minute with them

what the fuck do you guys expect from fathers
>>
>>82612461
I don't remember this. Be more specific please. Time is distorted in this show, how much time is between an episode? Tony spending 5 minutes with his kid once every 3 episodes is like spending an hour with your kid every 3 months.
>>
He wanted them not to live the same life as him, and he tried to encourage them to be better people. However, he did this based on his own conception of what he wanted them to be. He really liked the idea of Meadow being a doctor, because he wanted his children to grow up in a certain way. While that way was much better than it could have been, it still lead him to try to force his kids down a certain path that might not be best for them. Also, he wasn't attentive enough with AJ, only trying to deal with the aftermath of all his problems.

He definitely wasn't a bad father, but great is a stretch.

This. It's pretty obvious he bribes people he loves. The stereo for his mum, ice for Carm, the car for AJ, the car for Meadow. He rarely expresses genuine emotions (which is the point of the show). So he is constantly compensating for this; because he knows about his flaws.
>>
>>82612263
>you can't blame your parents for everything
I suppose if the kid is retarded or autistic, the parents can't be blamed, except for having poor genes, but other than that, the child is to be molded by the parents. Innate genius or dysfunction are aberrations and exceptions to this.
>>
>>82612389
how about you tell me what makes a good father? imo it's showing unconditional love, even when aj did some fucked up shit he shouted at him but besides his punishment treated him normal again. he also was the right mix between father and friend
>>
>>82612656

>>

yeah but they didn't show them doing everything in the show. my perception from him comes from the earlier seasons, I remember him going fishing with aj for example. in the later seasons they were at an age where they started doing their own thing

Off the top of my head, he went to his daughter's soccer games in the pedo coach episode, went to AJ's football games, went on a road trip with Meadow to look at college campuses, took AJ to see a crackwhore, watched TV with AJ while eating ice cream.

They were both shit parents unable to adequately raise their children around the lifestyle they both lived.

AJ turned out barely okay but nothing spectacular after being a total fuck up numerous times, and Meadow ends up on track to be a lawyer who defends crooked criminals.
>>
>>82612898
how about you share your opinion instead of criticizing everyone. and being a father doesn't make you a good one since anyone can become father
>>
>>82611756
he basically left most of the raising shit to his wife and just brought in money and made sure they were protected from his job

which whatever that's how most oldschool guys saw the roll of fathering. keep kids safe and fed, let mom deal with their upbringing otherwise

but I wouldn't say he was a great father anymore than saying his wife was a great money earner, that just wasn't his roll. Even he himself acknowledges that. He blames the wife whenever they're fuck ups but also credits her whenever they're good (remember meadow graduating and blooming and him telling wife that that was all her and congratulating her, he was actually p sincere in that moment and often credited her as a good mother/women compared to what he could have ended up with)

what did everyone on the show have against degenerate gamblers? a old lady from green grove even gets called one
>>
>>82613072
Because they have to deal with degenerate gamblers that don't pay their debt all the time.
>>
>>82612923
>road trip with Meadow
Lied to her, killed someone. Maybe he had good intentions but if you think she didn't learn that her father was lying that die you are wrong.
>took AJ to see a crackwhore
He was also just checking out his investment.
>watched TV with AJ while eating ice cream.
He is a fat fuck and enjoys those things without AJ being there tho.

That's the point. He always uses this stuff as a pretext. He keep lying and serving his own interests. AJ knows but can't articulate that. Meadow might be as smart as him but comes to the conclusion that she won't change him.
>>
>>82612980
"I tell people you're like your mother but you're all me"
>>
>>82613072
This gambling shit triggers me. In one episode they made a point of Tony not gambling cause he watched his father fucking up that one dude and in some other episodes he gambles. Wtf chase?
>>
>>82613125
>Lied to her, killed someone.
So what? I'm not saying he was a great dad, but don't pretend like he didn't spend time with his kids.
>>

>how about you share your opinion instead of criticizing everyone

I'm here too, though, anon... And I'm fulfilling the thread quota for the meta peanut gallery.

Let me read through and I'll get back to you.
>>
>>82613193
It's not about the amount of time but about the quality of time. Studies are backing this up since decades now.

As for Tony; Meadow picks up on him lying/cheating which devalues advice he gives later on i.e. he is not a good parent.
>>
>>82613193
there is also no point in showing tony everytime doing shit with his kids.you see him watching tv with artie and tony b one time but it's implied they do it regularly. when aj wanted to spend time with his friends instead of him he was genuinely hurt by it
>>
>>82611938
But that nigger kike totally would have kicked Tony's ass.

That cunt was obnoxious.
>>
>the worst thing he did was attack meadow for dating a mulignan
>not best
>>
>>82613164
you're fucking retarded anon
>>
>>82613128
meh I interpreted that scene less literal

it's kind of a thing in the strong oldschool father archetype to be disappointed in the son but see themselves in their daughters. That whole episode kinda highlighted their gap yet showed their love.

besides that while she might have some of his characteristics she was still more raised by the mother. Disciplined by her most and any issues she had usually the mother had the better solution (like not reacting to her dating a black guy cause she knew it was just young rebellion and reacting would fuel it to last longer out of spite)
>>
>>82611887
>He warned Meadow not to fuck niggers.
That's just an honest portrayal of any modern urban Italian family.
>>
>>82613380
I am not though. The "I don't gamble" part is in season two and he tell that to Melfi. No reason to lie, no reason to pretent. I think we see him later gamble once in a casino and then there is the horse racing subplot. They forgot some stuff from earlier seasons and unless you convince me otherwise I will keep assuming this is flawed writing in an otherwise great show.
>>
>>82613454
are you trolling or just too stupid to be watching the sopranos?
>>
>>82611756

>Tony a great anything

I find it funny whenever Sopranos fans idolize Tony when throughout the whole series Chase is trying to show Tony as someone living with a lot of insecurities and issues in his life and he ends up taking it out on others, including the ones nearest to him.

>uses Chris as a surrogate son and ignores AJ for most of the series, then wonders why AJ ended up so fucked up in the end
>ends up ruining his relationship with Chris anyway because he can't help projecting his insecurities onto him
>everything good that happened with Meadow was not because but despite Tony, and he still thinks he deserves credit for any of it

I guess when he's surrounded by even worse shitty people, he might seem like some kind of hero, but it's pretty fucking hilarious when someone finds his character endearing. Even James said he found his character deplorable to the end.
>>
>>82611756

>putting the family unit in jeopardy by sleeping with whores
>great father

pick one
>>
>>82613525
I am too stupid. Please enlighten me without claiming that Tony was merely lying.
>>
Would be a cool dad, tbqh.
/tv/ fags won't admit it though, even though most of their dads are probably cuckold betas.
>>
>>82613549
I don't idolize tony, he's a piece of shit but I still liked and rooted for him, also how did he project insecurities on chris?
>>
>>82613653
his gambling didn't star until the horse thing. in the last season he owes 200k from hesh to make up for his gambling losses

>>
>>82611756
His relationship with Meadow was kind of sweet; he never really understood AJ. I can't really call him a great father with the shit he pulled during the college scouting with Meadow, going out of his way to whack a guy and putting her in the line of fire, which I guess is an example of what was happening all the time.
>>
>>82611887
But she's so dark!

>>82613808

>>
>>82613960
he said he doesn't gamble before he started gambling, hows that bad writing

He said he would never gamble because gambling is connected to a major fucking trauma (which kicks of the whole fucking story of the show). Also I never said it was bad, just flawed.

By your logic he would stop having panic attacks after meeting her which didn't happen. Also it was not his father that was punished for gambling but his father was the one punishing.
So stop sperging just because there is something you haven't noticed
>>
>>82614551

i felt it was that she went the route of rich lawyer, giving up her initial desire to help people and instead just defend the richest guy. also implies that she was the target and ultimately killed in the last unseen frame (yeah, yeah, i know tony blah blah)
>>

i'm not the same anon talking about "pie o pie". the subtleties of the show went over your head you should try watching it again.
>>
>>82614645
There was a scene later on of her talking about mezzogiorno and stuff. And then she stated to Tony she is still affected by the way the FBI treated him.
And we know very well (from Jonny Sacc and Junior) that defending the mafia can make you rich. So I am not sure we disagree here.
