OP is right. The dialog should be written with no focus put on the viewer learning the characters names. Film is a visual medium, and so they can recognize the characters through appearance. It should feel natural, but eventually you'll learn the characters names as they're said in general conversation.

Alien does a great job at this, the Godfather is another good example.

Imagine being Christopher Tolkien in that scene and having to be all like "damn, Peter Jackson, your fuckin' directing fine, all progressive with your elf warrior woman OC and horrific CGI Legolas brick jumping.
