sci fi is a really overrated concept. we're basically extending an idea that only should have lasted a decade. we know what the future is going to look like and its nothing like the fucking hack pulp sci fi concepts that are being cashed out for movies now

you see, there are movies that are based around a fictional scientific idea, and this is where you get true hard sci-fis. Those ones are normally interesting at the very least.

What you're complaining about is a cynical future movie with a sci-fi paint job. in fact, the moment you make a movie take place in the future, it gets all gloomy and makes it seem like we're on a course for extinction. this setting doesn't allow you to properly explore the ideas of science fiction, it just lets you explore ideas of philosophy and sociology. the sci-fi aspect is just some bullshit aesthetic.

Stuff like Primer and Ex Machina are decent sci-fi because its not preachy and are just think-pieces on the technology they exhibit.
Stuff like the Matrix is more about muh dystopia than anything else.

The thing that's annoyed me about 2049 so far is the fact that it all looks so clean. The original blade runner world looked worn, lived in. But this just looks like any other cgi sci fi world
