Don't assume that she's overreacting. Without knowing the details of the matter, it's safe to give both her and the man the benefit of the doubt that what they're saying is true. The only possible excuse I could fathom for calling someone the latter rather than the former is that they're putting "person" before "color", implying that they're a person first and their ethnicity is irrelevant, as opposed to putting "colored" first and defining them by their race.
That's some mental gymnastics right there, and I'm probably giving them too much credit.
What it most likely actually is is just another example of outrage culture, getting artificially upset over something that doesn't matter so they can get attention. If that's the case, then nothing you can say will ever be enough to placate these people. Black people are real, and "black" is the most widely accepted term to describe them. "colored" became antiqued. "Negro" became antiquate". Black is still in the game. They're different labels, but used to describe 1 real thing. Not many fake things.

Because no one does that. Calling someone "white", doesn't mean they're literally white. If you want to be technical, all people are colored to some degree. And they don't want to be called "colored", because they feel it separates them from their own. It's not at all technical to make the separation between whites and colored. Lumping blacks, and I suppose Latinos, and SE Asians, and all these darker skinned groups together, and putting them under a single umbrella "colored", is the opposite of technical. So if you want to make the technical argument, it should be against the term "colored".
