In the cartoon they used the force to stop the fall on clone troopers and themselves and also used it to jump higher but nobody flies with it. I don't know if its considered canon or not though.

Don't the jedi believe in trying to capture rather than kill their enemies? Maybe he wanted to slice his ass up in a fit of vengeance. Maul would have likely fought it anyways in the same way that yoda and palpatine had the force push fight in episode 3.
