Thoughts on Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs show? I hope they make a new season soon.

Also, who here has signed the pledge?
>>
>>82385096
Is he still doing Dirty Jobs?
>>
>>82385096
As a proud cuck, I have signed the pledge.
>>
>>82385502
No, I'm pretty sure now he's just collecting annual $10 million royalty checks from the show while relaxing in his San Francisco mansion.
>>
>trying to deflect from Shill Nye's failures by projecting onto Mike Rowe

Nope.
>>
>>82385096
*signs pledge*

Cool, now I'm ready for a dirty job!
>>
>>82387305
I'm ready to get dirty with Mike Rowe...
>>
Threadly reminder, Mike Rowe has a net worth of $35 million dollars, every job he has ever had has been in entertainment, and he's not grateful for anything in life or had to struggle.

But take that shitty blue collar job and be happy in it, never aspire to be something better.
>>
>>82385096

I was thrilled that this thread was still up from yesterday, then I realized it is just a repost.

>>
>>82387904
This is the first time I've seen this thread, is Mike Rowe a meme on this board now?

Dirty Jobs hasn't even been on in like 5 years.
>>
>>82385096
I'm always in for more Dirty Jobs.
>>
>>82387785
>But take that shitty blue collar job and be happy in it, never aspire to be something better.

Where is it even implied in the pledge that you shouldn't aspire for something better?
>>
>>82387785
Is he really worth $35 Million?
>>
>>82385096
Can some give me a summary of the pledge?
>>

>>

>>
>>82388301
Dirty Jobs isn't reality TV.
>>
>>82389437
It won 3 Emmys for Outstanding Reality Program.
>>
>>82385579
THE PLEDGE is basically cuckservatism.txt. It's great to work in school and at your jobs, but it's a small part of what actually leads to material prosperity. Being a good citizen and deserving good things does not magically make them happen to you. Moreover, employment is a business transaction, and you own your employer nothing outside the terms of the deal.

>>
>>82388239
The whole thing is basically 'If you're not a millionaire living in a state of bliss, you only have yourself to blame'.

Anyone who claims there's no such thing as a shit job clearly hasn't got much real world experience. The command of 'Hurr just get a better one!' can be ruined by any number of environmental factors outside the individual's control or consequences of decisions the individual made years or even decades before, the outcome of which they had no realistic capability of predicting.

There's also the implication that the reason people are poor is because 'they slept in' and that wealthy people became wealthy by working harder than everyone poorer than them, neither of which are supportable statements if you examine them even casually.

Not to say that people have zero control over their potential prosperity but the list is taking it to the other extreme from 'Durr poor people is just victims of circumstance' by implying becoming wealthy is simply a matter of mindset.

>I believe there is no such thing as a "bad job"

Well there are jobs now like Uber driver where the worker is forced to take on so many of the operating costs while the employer slashes fares that you actually lose money in the long run. In fact the Uber has lost billions of dollars as a company, the only way it's able to stay operating and undercut taxis is because they have a huge fund of venture capitalist cash to fall back on until they drive the competition out of business, then they'll jack up the price to a profitable level. Odds are they'll go under by then though.
>>
>>82388239
The part that clearest about it is number 5. Debt is pretty much a necessity to get anywhere in the modern world, unless your parents are rich as fuck. College beyond an associate's degree pretty much requires it; even for blue collar jobs, many certification programs are expensive, too. Unless you live an area with good public transportation (which isn't most the US), in most circumstances you need to go into debt to get a reliable car to go to work. Buying a house requires debt, too. If you want to start a business, typically, you need to take out a loan to do so.

But according to Mike, you're better off being homeless than doing anything the incurs debt.

9 is stupid because if an interviewer asks you for certificates, degree, etc and you just say "hurr I go to the library" you'll get laughed out of there.

I remember seeing this years ago when I was younger and thinking this was a great pledge that made sense. Just bite down, work hard, and good things happen to you.

In reality, which is a place Mike Rowe doesn't live with his millions made by pretending to be blue collar, none of this applies. Showing up early, staying late, and pretending your shit job is an opportunity while being grateful for the chance to labor away at all is a great path to being an underpay, underprivileged sheeple. We don't live in a world where you magically get rewarded. Your boss will happily pay you minimum wage for your skills until you become even the slightest liability, in which case you're immediately fired.

Dude has no idea what he's talking about, nowadays if you put in the extra effort they just take advantage of you. Raises for most blue collar jobs are just a carrot on a stick, and they'll never even give you a bite of the carrot.

He doesn't even support unions.

http://mikerowe.com/2009/06/united-we-stand-are-unions-still-relevant-today/

>The role of unions, and their relevance, has changed over the years. Personally, I’m of the mind that certain industries still justify their existence, while other do not. But one thing is certain – once a union is formed, it will not go gently into that good night. Like any other group, they are loath to disband, ever.

>I have mixed feelings. As a believer in the individual, I will always support a persons right to make the best deal he can in his/her industry of choice. If acceptable terms cannot be reached, my first inclination is not to unionize or strike, but to simply seek out another industry. Let the larger law of supply and demand sort it out. Easier said than done, I know, but joining organizations of any kind is not my first choice, personally.

>We are now competing in a world market, and the standards most unions attempt to uphold are making it difficult to compete globally. So we’re forced to choose between the workers standard of living, and the competitive strength of his employer. Tough call, and one that I’d never try to make in a vacuum. (Is the striking union providing service to a public company? How will the shareholders be affected? Am I a shareholder? Are we talking about air traffic controllers, cops, textile workers, or teachers, or in my case, actors? Will a strike bring riot, or simply more reruns and reality shows? The stakes are different.)

>Jay Leno invited me back onto The Tonight Show before the writer’s strike had been resolved. Tricky business. I’m not a member of WGA, and Discovery is not a signatory, but I am in their sister unions – SAG and AFTRA, and sympathetic to their cause. I also had friends in those picket lines, and had to decide whether or not to cross. In the end, I did, for the simple reason that getting more people to watch Dirty Jobs is more important to me than any other professional issue. (I also have friends in coal mines and crab boats, I decided their stories were more important to promote than any show of solidarity I might have offered.) Now, if I depended on writers to tell me what to say on Dirty Jobs, I would have likely gone the other way, but that’s not the case, and the decision came down to one of personal choice.

>Ultimately, a personal choice is what most Unions ask us to forego, in favor of a united stand. I think there are times in life when such decisions make sense. And there are times when they are counter-productive. But in this day and age, there are very few black and white truths regarding organized labor. Times have changed, and there’s little to be done about that.

>is a member of a union
>crossed his own picket line

http://mikerowe.com/2017/05/otwappalledbythesweatpledge/

>I came up with this nonsense several years ago while drinking beer at my kitchen table and searching for a way to sum up the kind of belief system I’d like to encourage in the work force. What I settled on was the S.W.E.A.T Pledge – a 12-point statement of belief that espoused my personal feelings toward work. It stands for “Skill and Work Ethic Aren’t Taboo,” and its format was inspired by the Boy Scout Law and AA’s Twelve Step Recovery Plan. Mostly though, it’s a collection of lessons learned from Dirty Jobs that I believe every worker would benefit from embracing, regardless of their job or skill set.

>Now, you didn’t tell me Karyn, what specific parts of the pledge you found most objectionable, but I’d be curious to know. Typically, people like to complain about the patriotic undertones of points 1 and 2, the parsimonious vibe of #5, and the paternalistic feel of #8. Many have accused me writing a conservative manifesto, but I don’t see anything in this pledge that’s inherently political. In fact, most of these statements are in line with classic liberal thought.

>I’ve also been told my Pledge is “weighted heavily in favor of employers,” who are really just looking for “more and more ways to abuse their workers.” I don’t see it that way, but I can understand why others do. It’s popular these days, to see employers as the enemy. I reject that out of hand, just as I reject the idea that the merits of an individual worker have anything to do with their race or gender.

>>
>>82393226
Former "Dirty Jobs" host Mike Rowe does still flex his musical muscles now and then, but just for the love of it. It's not a job or anything.

Indeed, he was never looking for a career in opera. The truth is, he says, he was in it for the girls.

"I joined the opera to get my union card and meet girls," he told the "Tampa Bay Times." "I figured I'd do one show and quit. But the girls were everywhere, and the truth is, the music was really decent."

His musical training doesn't stop at opera -- again, that was a practical decision on his part (the union card got him into show business). He started in his high school choir, and then fell in love with barbershop -- he formed a quartet called Semi-Fourmal ("because there were four of us and we were terribly clever," he said in an interview on the Barbershop Harmony Society's official website).

It is this kind of singing he still likes to dabble in. He talks in the interview about winning an impromptu competition in 2007 among his old singing-group colleagues in his native Baltimore.

His vocal training has clearly served him well. Apart from his long run on Discovery's "Dirty Jobs," (which was canceled last year after eight seasons and hundreds of messy career profiles) most of Rowe's work has been as a narrator. His most recent gig is doing voiceovers on "Airplane Repo," also on Discovery.

He also keeps himself busy running mikeroweWORKS, a foundation dedicated to promoting work in the trades.

Unions are supposed to ensure you're not getting taken advantage of illegally. Most people who work trades are cucks and usually very dumb so they don't know the law and just go along with whatever their employer says.

Notice how a lot of jobs requiring a college education don't even bother having unions.

Honestly if you're making minimum wage for 2 years at anything you really have to be doing something wrong. Wages are generally determined by how scarce your labour is. You're not likely to get a raise in a low skill job unless you're literally best friends with your boss, and even then, your boss is more likely to abuse your friendship than the other way around. And someone is gonna have to fill that job, so even if the anon leaves it, some other sucker is gonna fill that spot and so on and so on. Telling everyone who has a shit job that they should just get a better one isn't a long-term solution, because someone has to do that job. We should honestly just lower the working week to the point where there's no unemployment, so there isn't an army of unemployed people waiting to fill shit jobs, and people stuck being overworked in the same shit jobs unable to do much of anything because they don't want to fuck themselves being unemployed.
