The Ferengi have access to replicators and holodecks. The necessities of life can thereby be replicated and the luxuries in life can be simulated. What do they do with the latinum they earn? What is their economy based on? One possibility is that they use latinum to acquire other compounds that can't be replicated, but this doesn't really answer the deeper question at hand. Another possibility is that they trade for things that are valuable in virtue of extrinsic properties that can't be replicated or simulated (antiques, rarities, pieces of art, etc), but this seems far-fetched.
Can someone explain?
to prevent society falling apart people are raised to resist the temptation to spend all their time in the holodeck and other distractions and vices that technology allows
different cultures developed different ways to do this

So they toil away so that they can pay for things that they would otherwise get for free?
Land.

What do they need land for?

Replicators require raw materials, replicators and holodecks both require energy.

They accumulate things in order to gain social status. They have no particular need for either money or the stuff it buys, since most stuff in Trek can be replicated or simulated anyway, but having more stuff allows them to climb their society's hierarchy.

>wants us to go to a Troi thread
This is why we need them to add a /trek/ board. Trek threads generate more memes, discussion, activity and interest than any other intellectual property on /tv/.
Who fucking knows all they need is starlight and everyone in that quadrant could live like kings for centuries.

Good question. The Puppeteers in the Ringworld universe are also traders of a sort, at least the insane adventurous ones are. Meanwhile, many trillions live on their homeworld, most in an interior apartment that's basically a holodeck, with a teleporter to leave once in a while if they want.

Replicators, or atleast the pristine utopian efficient one's, are Federation exclusive and protected technology
plus the fucking Ferengi don't want to go anywhere near it, the whole concept of it would mean their society would be undone so they don't even try to procure it, the risk of transforming into socialists is to great for them, even despite to potential profit gains
