Because while her performance was strong, the writing wasn't strong enough to give it any weight. It was exquisite reacting, emotionally rich, but the film itself was what I call "Grief Porn" and ultimately it felt empty because the character aspect just wasn't there - likely due to lack of storytelling.

There were a lot of things to like about this movie (the emotional honesty of Portman's performance, the washed out visuals, the editing, the entirety of the assassination sequence and the score), but none of it came together to create something cohesive. And that lack of cohesion, and the weakness of the script/narrative flow, hurt her portrayal of Jackie.
