The Gunslinger is pretty much that, and works fine as a standalone.

Once you get into the second book he's drawing tarot cards or some shit to teleport into someone else's body in the "real" world (Modern Earth, and in 'Murica) through different points in time, while simultaneously trying to bring the people he's possessing into his world so that they can go on an adventure together. Also he's being attacked by crab monsters while this is all going on and one of the people he possesses is a junkie and the other is a schizo crippled black lady that constantly tries to kill him.

After that they go on a wild adventure in book 3 where they fight gargantuan robot bears and their kid companion almost gets raped (but whatever, he died in the first book anyway lol) and then they find a raccoon thing that says its name over and over like some fucking mickey mouse bullshit but THEN THE REAL NIGGA SHIT STARTS UP, and they ride a psychopathic robot train that tries to kill them

After that theres a whole lotta hijinks like fighting doctor doom wolf robots with lightsabers, killing homosexual vampires and furries, one of them jumping in front of a truck to save Steven King IRL in some meta shit that I can't even wrap my head around to this day, and a giant spider baby that dies from eating bad horse meat but not before fucking up everyone including the man in black

With that said, sometimes I feel like people who are fans of the Dark Tower forget how truly awful it is after the fourth book. It has some okay moments (I for one really enjoyed the ending -- not the Crimson King part but rather the entering of the tower itself), but overall 5-8 are just god damned awful. A generic "save my universe" plot with a gunslinger and an evil devil guy is miles above what King churned out after Wizard and Glass.

They were pointed out as special in W&G because Cuthbert and Alain had rinkydink peashooters because they were just trainees while Roland had the real deal gunslinger guns handed down by his father etc. So the coffin gang knew they weren't just dealing with teenage dipshits.

I started reading them when book 2 was new. We'd get a new one every couple of years. And I was loving the series up through book 4 (though it's not as good as the first 3).

I bought book 5 with high expectations and then realized that they essentially only had about 20 pages of forward plot development.... virtually the whole book was a prequel. And a really bad one at that.

I think King had pretty bad writer's block at that point and didn't know how to resolve his series so he used a classic writer's block breaking technique, starting the story in a different place in time. Unfortunately he couldn't weave it back to his original yarns so he made it prequel material....

I never finished that book and I hear they only get worst.

The Gunslinger novels are sort of like the tv show Lost. They start strong, but the writer(s) had no idea how to finish them so they just get very convoluted and sloppy....

4 was the prequel, not 5.
And honestly it fucks up the pacing and plot progression on the first go through, but I appreciated it much, much more the second time. The story self-contained is really enjoyable, shows a lot about Roland, and is a neat view into the pre-fall world.
I'd say it's the second best book in the series after The Gunslinger.
But yeah you didn't miss much on 5 and 6. 7 had some fun moments tho.

Honestly, after seeing the trailer, casting Elba is the last thing I'm concerned about. Eye color isn't a big deal when it comes to an adaptation.
The stuff with Susannah would have had to be changed, but it could have been worked out. But it's clear that they're going to use basically nothing from the plot whatsoever and have it be some YA sci-fi bullshit. So like his being black is probably the smallest change they made to the source material.
