It's more the fact they're all raging assholes and cunts that makes the show work, not their competence. As far as being spies go, they're not half bad. Malory, Archer, Lana and Ray are all competent in the field, Kreiger is a competent lab man, Carol/Cheryl/Cherlyne/Crystalllll and Pam are kinda eh, but at the end of the day what brings all the threads loose isn't the fact that they're idiots, it's the fact they're horrible people.

John Le Carre, an actual spy and author of serious spy novels always argued that spying often cocked up for reasons familiar to anyone with an office job. If you want chapter and verse, its in the end notes to "The Secret Pilgrim".

He wrote a story where a guy blows his entire network by leaving flash cards with their names on sat on his car roof. Another novel, "The Looking Glass War" is all about incompetence, he regretted he couldn't write more of them like that because in reality events often hinged on improbable mistakes but readers don't tend to accept them in thriller plots.

Even in the ridiculous James Bond films, his tiresome competence is played as a bit of a joke no later than OHMSS. "I didn't know you were familiar with lepidoptery 007?".

Have *you* ever actually watched the show? Archer is extremely competent. That's what makes his lack of professionalism so hilarious. He's a ridiculously good agent, but he does so while drunk and only half-paying attention.

There are multiple scenes where he does awesome secret agent stuff while focusing on completely different things, like when he talks to Cyril on the phone while fighting underwater or flirts with Lana in the middle of a gunfight....
