.44 magnum and .44 special are different cartridges. They can be both fired from .44 magnum-chambered revolvers but not the other way round because .44 magnum is slightly longer to prevent it from being loaded to .44spc only guns(which would lead to potentially life-threatening accidents).

Of course he actually fires with different revolver on stage because there were no .44 blanks or they were too rare to care about actually getting them on set.

He basically brags about using hot, very powerful cartridge while using still quite potent, but weaker one. That being said a lot of Harry's antics are done just to intimidate the guys on the other side of the barrel or get them to pull a gun on him so he can kill with no repercussions(he obviously knows whether he fired 5 or 6 shots in both scenes).
