>>

mind your own business you fucking alt-right piece of shit
>>
>>82290176
That was an outllier. Same as Breaking Bad. Look at how many shows were outright cancelled because the strike went on so long. Look at movies like Quantum of Solace, Transformers 2, X-men Origins, etc. Similar to the last strike, smart producers have already finished filming or won't start until later. Things that are filming right now (like Avengers 3/4 and Aquaman next week) will be interesting to see the final product.

>>82290238
The WGA specifically want better royalties for streaming services (since syndication doesn't happen now), retaining their current pension level, an improved payment scale for shorter TV seasons, and the ability to work on multiple shows at the same time.
>>
>>82290238
>TV writers earned an average of $194,478 in 2015 and film writers earned an average of $181,267 that same year, according to an earnings report released by WGA last summer.

>>82290317
I don't see the issue. Just because someone is earning 6 figures doesn't automatically mean they are being compensated fairly. TV shows and movies are making a lot of money right now, writers just want their fair share of the pie. Especially considering how popular tv has become these days, with streaming factored into the equation.
>>
>>82290317
that's peanuts compared to what actors and other people earn
>>
>>82290356
how so? If someone writes for a show that generates a million a month, should they be content with getting $200k a year?

You think they are entitled because you're earning $10 stacking shelves at Walmart, but guess what? That's what you are worth. They are worth more than that.
>>
>>82290418
This, RDJ is making 200 million for an Avengers movie yet the writer only makes six figures. It's doesn't add up, anyone would ask for a little more.

Oh no the horror... However will producers rehash shit over and over again without them.

The difference between now and 2008 is that the average American doesn't watch scripted shows anymore, and chinks don't give a single fuck about acting or writing - and the chinks bring in more money than American audiences do

Writers traditionally made most of their money through royalties via syndication. These days, with the advent of streaming, syndication is all but dead. This is just one of many issue that writers face due to streaming. Also, more and more studios are producing shorter seasons these days.

I know you aut-rightists hate any sort of populism with a left wing bent (you only pretend to care about workers) but renegotiation is necessary.

I agree with this totally. I just don't agree with the people in the thread saying they should be paid equivalent to actors. They're not as important. They SHOULD be as important but the American public doesn't really appreciate good writing like they do charismatic acting, so amazing writers aren't that in demand except by the niche crowd.

Because all screen writers are in a guild or union. Even if your guild or union is not striking you don't cross the picket line because their guild or union could do the same to you if that happens. Nobody strikes for fun or just to be bloody minded, if you strike you are not in work but you loose your pay, there is no compensation, holiday or sick pay, it is the last resort after all other attempts to get the employers to listen to reasonable demands have failed.

Put in context of the actual film the person who writes the screenplay, especially the initial writer not the guys that do the tinkering with it but are still given equal billing in the credits, is the most important person on the film's creative side. They're more important than the director, who always gets top billing and oodles of cash when usually they are just putting together the work of a good writer and storyboarder and more important than the actors who are just voicing the writer's work.

Writers should get more money dependant on how much their work impacts the film and should get higher profile billing. I am more likely to put my money down to see a film if it is billed as "from the writer of {insert name of film I liked}" than "from the director of {insert name of film I liked}", so why shouldn't Hollywood trade on a writer's name more and give them more money.

>They're more important than the director
This is hardly universal. I don't think that Hitchcock wrote of his films, (at least not the famous ones).

Also, I don't know how you can say with such confidence that the writer is more important than the director. If this were the case, the average salaries of writers and directors would be closer. You might mean to say that their roles are more necessary, as you can't have a movie without a script, but you can't have a movie without direction either, so that argument doesn't hold muster either. The truth is that adequate writers are more plentiful than adequate directors, or at every level, the cost of the director will be greater than the writers.

Because there is one Ben Affleck and literally thousands of writers who can do a batman script. Hell, they could just copy it from the comics. Pay any starving writer 10000 dollars and they can do it.

or maybe they could greenlight some of those gazillion great scripts they have lying in their vaults. you know, all those projects they've buried because they don't feature quipping clowns in spandex? those films that would actually have some value?

start by pulling the trigger on caruth's the modern ocean and a topiary, shot back to back. thank me later, hollytwats.

>>
>>82293173
who made you god of weights and measures? their work is worth whatever a studio is willing to pay. using a union to artificially raise that (and blackballing people who want to work during a strike) is not a legitimate method. it's effective because muh unions, but it shouldn't be championed.

unions are bullies and the WGA is probably one of the worst.

also writing is not a fucking hard job, you sit around in a room for 6 hours and pitch ideas back and forth. wow, fucking backbreaking labor, that. wish i was working in a salt mine instead.
>>
>>82292344
Yeah fuck thinking, thats what jews and chinks do.

>>
>>82301199
they're basically just trying to make the concept of unions look bad by having people with the cushiest job possible bitch about their working conditions, strike for no reason, and gain nothing from striking, but ultimately destroy entertainment.
>>
they out of money in hollywood or what?
>>
>>82289945
fake news, deal was reached.

http://money.cnn.com/2017/05/02/media/writers-strike-hollywood-tv/

>In a memo to its membership, guild negotiators cited several key concessions, including increased studio contributions to their health plan, and a new definition for short-order TV series that will earn writers more pay for episodes that take longer than 2.4 weeks to produce.
>The contract also adds job protections for members on parental leave.
then there is this gem

>"Did we get everything we wanted? No. Everything we deserve? Certainly not," the WGA memo added.

they "deserve" a bullet
>>
>>82301458
If they don't like it then they can git out, go write top 10 lists on gawker

OP stop getting everybody's hopes up. What will happen is, they will just dust off some old scripts and keep on churning out garbage until the writers cave like they did last time. Hollywood crashing and burning would be great but the fact is there's an overabundance of writers and and overabundance of scripts they can work off of, the value of writing is extremely low right now.

It is a lot pretty much anywhere outside LA and NYC. If I were making 200k/y I could pay off my car, my house, and the rest of my loans inside 10 years and then build a nest egg to retire before I hit 40. When you live alone with no kids in a modest house in an inexpensive neighborhood you don't have a lot of expenditures. I can live comfortably on 85k/y right now, but it's a long road to retirement.

You deny them the right to gain fair compensation from their work- for what reason? Do you fear diminishing quality? Why do you feel that they are already adequately compensated
>>
>>82313282
Those are the famous ones. Most actors, the background extras and people who do one-off characters and are largely unknown, don't command a lot of money. But a famous actor has marketing power and that's where the money is and why they get paid so much.
