Loved this show seasons 1 and 2. Season 3 was pretty bad and I don't have any hope for season 4.

Season 3 felt like it was written by somebody late to the game. If seasons 1 and 2 were an inside joke, season 3 would be written by that friend who keeps repeating the joke until it's not funny anymore. It's no longer clever funny, it's just bottom of the barrel, low hanging fruit funny.

Still enjoyable but will probably continue to get worse and worse. It's honestly becoming comparable to The Big Bang Theory in terms of "guys, we're NERDS LMAO" type of humor. Pretty cringeworthy.

I think "Homicide" from season 2 is the best episode of SV. On the bottom of the barrel is the Double Asshole bit that I believe is funny, but is simply vulgar pun based humor that is played for shock value. Erlich is good for one of these an episode and caters to the type of person who thinks "fuck" portmanteaus are the height of wordplay.

The meat of the episode is the exploration of the "Homicide" world and it "bro' Entrepreneur culture . The fun satire of the this subculture is different from the silicon valley nerd stereotype but still integral to the SV experience. The delvings into subcultures like brogrammers, SV parties, Tech crunches, self driving cars and really anything outside of the house or hooli hq are what enlivened this show and gave it such a realistic feel. Without these elements the show feels horribly formulaic and contrived, as if the writers have never been to SV.

The crowning glory of course is swotting the stunt man's death. HR bullshit is universally bullshit but SV culture takes it to new heights as the land of true beliers. And that really is the heart of the show, outwardly SV believes it is mankind's saviour but inwardly they are just as human as the rest of us. This scene captures that irony perfectly. ALso it is by far the best character driven comedy on the show because it is Dinesh and Gilfoyle's shittiyness that make a mockery of the system designed with so much blind optimism. These two are the comedy engines of the show and are given less and less as time goes on because they are stuck in the house and stale jokes of "your code sucks" can't go on forever.

The condor cam is a writing cop out, sure, but it is based on real events mixed with movie parody and the payoff is genuinely funny. The show is moving out from the SV world into a fictional writers bubble and its choking off all the air.

Yeah. To be honest, I expected this Season to start with Gavin out of Hooli and with Monica working with the guys in the basement. But Gavin kept his position and his power in Hooli even after all his screw-ups and Monica somehow went back to work for Laurie. They had a great chance to change the status quo and build something different this season. So far they missed it.

I like this opinion but I still believe the season 3 finale was the best episode of the series by virtue of all the little seemingly irrelevant non-sequitor storylines coming together (Action Jack and the Box, Gavin's animal metaphors, the blog, Bachmanity). It made the entire season feel relevant.

It's turning into a typical Mike Judge show, great at the beginning, mediocre as time goes on.

I think this is where we fundamentally disagree. On a mental level, it is a tight episode with tons of callbacks, in-refrences and tie ins. but is exactly what I meant when I said contrived. Its all writerly bullshit. Who cares about the blogger , honestly? She was a black hole of entertainment whenever she was on screen and I wanted less of her never more. Dues ex Machina's are never good writing especially on a show all about subverting that very notion.

I didn't like the blogger either but that was one element of my main point: Everything in season 3 felt like a bunch of random contrived events but the finale actually made them all necessary, and I think they did it in a natural way too. The Gavin Belson animal metaphors worked incredibly well on their own as a goofy laugh, but when the finale rolled around it turned out they ACTUALLY served a purpose.

This show was good.
