This you'd be surprised how much they use CGI for makeup effects on normal actors too. Sometimes they look nothing alike so it isn't hard for them to make a CGI version of Fisher either. Nah, there's a bunch of things they can do with her.

1. Have her appear digitally in episode 9 using CGI/make-up on a real actress/CGI on a real actress.

2. Rework one of the scenes in episode 8 to kill her off.

3. Kill her off-camera.

4. Quietly write her out.

5. Pull a Plan 9 and have her hairdresser portray her and just not show her face.

6. Take some scenes of her from episode 8 and use them in episode 9.

7. Remove a lot of her stuff from episode 8 and downplay her role, doing reshoots where necessary.

8. A combination of any of these.

Without having seen episode 8, I can't really say what they need to work with, but they can fix it.

Episode 8 could just set up an encounter that never happens. Kylo, as he's dying, tells Rey to tell Leia that Han was right. Then we end it with Leia being elected as leader of the New Republic although we never see her, or we see a CGI clip of her, or we see an unused clip, or something.

Remember how people say Dark Knight Rises was fucked because Heath Ledger was dead? But then the Joker not being in it wasn't even one of that movie's problems and it totally didn't matter?

I mean, hell, Dark Knight pretty much ends with them setting up that they'll run into each other again and then nah but he sees the Scarecrow for a third time.
