I viewed both of these films recently and was shocked to discover the discrepancy in critical reception between the two. Having been shot and released within a few years of each other, I felt that the films were comparable in concept; Despite this, I found Magnolia to be stronger in all respects, but I was shocked to learn that it wasn't received as well.
Memento is in many ways the embodiment of film school pretension, lacking logic, tact, and depth in its philosophical meaning. It masquerades as an art house piece but has nothing of value to say, no engaging elements in its photography, and mixed performances at best.
Magnolia holds brilliant performances across the board, intelligent cinematography, and philosophically nuanced themes.
I just wanted to vent my frustration here, I find it maddening that anyone could find mediocre tripe such as Memento to be superior to a masterpiece like Magnolia.

I'm not seeing how they're comparable.

I watched them both over the course of a few days among many other films and found them to be comparable. I'm also drunk and unemployed until June between the army and other work, so take it all with a grain of salt.
I felt that the intended emotional depth between the two was similar, but Memento fell flat.

It's too hard to sit through unless you're a 17 year old wigger who thinks it's DOPE AF
Magnolia...I'll never watch it again, but I will keep it. I'll keep it right on my desk, as a constant reminder that a bloated sense of self-importance is the most unattractive quality in a person or their work.

What's wrong with this scene?
And OP: You're too drunk. Magnolia and Memento are hardly similar movies. The ratings discrepancy also isn't as large as you think it is. What discrepancy is there isn't too hard to understand. Memento is a taut, unique thriller directed by the crowd-pleasing Christopher Nolan. Magnolia can easily be viewed as pretentious and at 188 minutes with hardly any action scenes and an out there ending, it definitely isn't for everyone.
I prefer Memento, but Magnolia is still a great film. One interesting similarity is that both films were directed by directors under 30. I'm approaching 30 and the idea of directing Magnolia is just insane, fug.
