>Ruling is hard. This was maybe my answer to Tolkien, whom, as much as I admire him, I do quibble with. Lord of the Rings had a very medieval philosophy: that if the king was a good man, the land would prosper. We look at real history and it’s not that simple. Tolkien can say that Aragorn became king and reigned for a hundred years, and he was wise and good. But Tolkien doesn’t ask the question: What was Aragorn’s tax policy? Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone – they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?

This was actually answered in The Hobbit. Yes, the orcs were all killed eventually. Every last one of them.

Seriously though, what is Daenerys' tax policy?

Perhaps she could get away with raiding random slaver villages to keep the treasury filled but if she plans to take the Iron Throne, where all the nations have a structurally rigid governmental system, that charade won't work.

If I was a citizen of Westeros and knew of this woman wanting to claim the throne I'd be really concerned with how she plans to keep the infrastructure stable.

The ignorance of basic narrative structure is astounding. The Lord of the Rings is not a book about the reign of King Aragorn, so of course it doesn't go into detail of his reign. The sheer arrogance meanwhile to say not simply that Tolkien merely didn't ANSWER those questions, which is true, but to assert that this was because Tolkien was too dumb to ASK them is breathtaking.

Meanwhile on the other hand, the rule of the Seven Kingdoms is vitally important to Martin's works, with the central character of books 1, 2 and 4 all also being the person in de facto charge of running them, and yet the lack of detail devoted to such matters (in comparison to his ability to describe the details of a meal or a cringey sex scene) is startling,

No, it's explained in the main text. They all fucked off to the mountains and various dark places they like to live in when a guy like Sauron isn't organizing them and forcing them to fight for him. But I suppose the only thing harder than ruling is actually reading.

OP didn't post it for the sake of baiting as many people as possible, but Tolkein quite literally did address all of these questions in an interview, explaining how each of them crossed his mind and why he decided against expanding on the post-LOTR middle earth politics. He proposes an attempted assassination of Aragorn and the political fall out from replacing the regents for example. He realized that to write those things would be pointless and hackish.

"uruk hai" just means orcs but was used to refer specifically to soldier orcs.

the uruk hair of isengard do seem to be a different breed than others and this is speculated by some character in the books to be the result of some human admixture but it is never confirmed. there were other uruk hai in other places that apparently did not warrant this speculation.

I guess it depends on how you define modern, but Tolkiens work has inspired some amazing art in various forms over the last century. Probably a luxury of coming out before commercialism was in full swing, but a lot of people have treated his work with great reverence. Even the LotR trilogy had that in spades though it fucked some details up, and that is a miracle especially when you start thinking about how Fellowship would have turned out if it was released tomorrow.

A modern mythology for the Anglo-Saxon race. He wanted his work to stand for something. He wanted a set of etiological myths to provide people a sense of connection with a heroic past.

There are adaptations of "real-world" mythology everywhere in his work, such as the fall of Numenor/Atalante (sound familiar?). It made for dry reading at times because he wasn't just telling a story. Like Hesiod before him, he was recording a canonical set of myths for posterity.

Tolkien's works aspired to be what the Homeric cycle was to the Greeks, The Aeneid to the Romans, or the Matter of France and Grimm's Fairy Tales were on the European continent. It was always an outlandish idea, but it's still a shame to see his works commericalized and co-opted into a "genre" called fantasy that bastardizes the original. He was never writing fantasy. He was writing myth.

>food can somehow stay fresh over the 10 year winters with no refrigeration

Cold is a relative term, but you obviously don't live in an area with no snowy winters so let me educate you.

Modern refrigerators tend to keep food at around 4°C (depending on the user's preference, but deviate too far from that and your milk will either be frozen or go rancid). Water freezes at 0°C, and where I live (Southern Ontario) we tend to have a period running from late November through early March where the daytime temperatures rarely or never exceed that magical 0°C. This roughly corresponds with the calendar winter in the northern hemisphere.

People deal with winter in many ways, and among the methods humanity has devised is to warm our homes are gas and electric heating. Utilities, however, are expensive, and so people apportion the heaters in their home to be in the areas where they will be most effective. Heaters tend to be placed in rooms close to windows so they can mingle with drafts of cold outside air. They don't tend to be placed in garages. The temperature in my garage is usually at or below freezing all winter long, despite waste heat drifting in from the parts of my house I actually care to heat. It is usually colder than my fridge even. I'm sure if I left a glass of water in my garage overnight in January I would come back to find it frozen.

If I had a detached grain silo, I certainly wouldn't care to heat that either. I would let the grain freeze and maybe let it thaw by the fire when I needed to mill it. I don't think people living through a ten year winter would have to worry about their food going bad from lack of refrigeration.

"I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men, it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless — while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors — like Denethor or worse. Post the complete version:

I did begin a story placed about 100 years after the Downfall, but it proved both sinister and depressing. Since we are dealing with Men it is inevitable that we should be concerned with the most regrettable feature of their nature: their quick satiety with good. So that the people of Gondor in times of peace, justice and prosperity, would become discontented and restless — while the dynasts descended from Aragorn would become just kings and governors — like Denethor or worse. I found that even so early there was an outcrop of revolutionary plots, about a centre of secret Satanistic religion; while Gondorian boys were playing at being Orcs and going around doing damage. I could have written a 'thriller' about the plot and its discovery and overthrow — but it would have been just that. Not worth doing.

I don't think you can expect to write a mythology post enlightenment and expect it to have the same effect though. The reason althose mainland mythologies have such an important connection to their respective cultures is because at one point that culture believed it was their actual history.

Tolkien came too late to the game if he intended TLoTR to be the same as mainland European mythologies.

And anyway, don't the English have Arthur?

Legolas and Sam are now girls. Gimli (and dwarves) are black. Gandalf is played by Sam Jackson. Sauron is not just an eye but a satan looking guy who lives at the top of the tower but can't leave without the ring. He talks to the Witch-Queen frequently about his evil plan. Lots of slow-mo for the action scenes. Quips.

Clear-cutting does not irreversibly destroy the environment and cause runaway errosion like Jarred Diamon would have you believe. The fact is that trees grow back. And mankind has been affecting the environment for far longer than the environmentalists say. In fact certain places in the world are actually increasing forest cover. Some to the point where they are unsuccessfully trying to introduce forests where they never existed (like China's attempts to "reforest" the arid lands south of the Gobi desert).

Have you ever been to New England? Take a walk in the forests around Massachussets and Connecticut some day. Every once in a while you'll come across a low stone fence surrounded by nothing but tall deciduous trees and mulch-covered soil. Thos eare some of the earliest farms in the United States. Their soils were depleted and the farmers moved west, to the Ohio Valley, the Missisippi, eventually the Midwest and beyond. But the trees returned. They're living beings and they always seek to fill the void when humans move on.

Lannisport would be the only port for the Westerlands as an Independent Kingdom. An independent nation is not going to give the ability to trade its main resource to a foreign kingdom, especially its historical rivals, and undercut itself in the process. Thus, if you wanted lannister gold for the majority of the westerosi history, you have to go to lannisport. Anything else would be handing over your treasured monopoly to your rivals.

I stumbled upon this a few days ago during a lore binge after rewatching the trilogy.

http://middle-earth.xenite.org/are-there-taxes-in-middle-earth/

Some autist has delivered a pretty good explanation.

>So while we cannot describe in great detail how the rulers of Middle-earth paid for all these services and accumulated their treasure hoards, we can say with 100% certainty that there were indeed taxes in Middle-earth. Tolkien did not need to explain how the economy worked in order to refer to it.

>If he had been writing stories about tax collectors and tax rebellions we would know more. As it is, taxes were incidental and only necessary as part of the background minutiae, occasionally referred to, sometimes only obliquely acknowledged. But one should not leap to the conclusion there was no system of taxation.
