She knew the ship from years of working on in and around it.

Rey had no business using the force for anything. She used telepathy and suggestion, both Master level abilities. The force isn't magic. It's like playing a guitar or doing martial arts. You have to be taught it and then you have to practice to get good at it. Rey had no business using anything other than Prescience or force danger sense. It's one of the least developed ideas in the movie and one of the weakest points, aside from the painfully reused death star imagery. There is no good explanation, the -best- explanation aside from weak writing is that Ren's actions had something to do with it, but since that has tenuous at best evidence you wouldn't be wrong to dismiss it.

More important is the fact that the Rey as an engineer and Rey as someone familiar with the Falcon isn't as far-fetched when you actually parse the dialog.

Kylo Ren is really inconsistent as a character.

By all he means he should be fairly powerful. He has Skywalker blood in him (the force runs strong in that family) and he was trained since youth by both Luke (a skilled warrior) and Snoke (the alleged originator of the dark side).

He seems extremely powerful when he is first introduced as he effortlessly stops and keeps gunfire suspended for quite a while. And he pulls memories out of Poe's mind with the force. Freezes Rey in place.
