Why was Aragorn crowned king? the people of Gondor don't know him, they don't know if he's capable of managing the kingdom, or if he's a tyrannical prick, or what his tax policies are. He wasn't even born in Gondor! The movie just has him crowned king all of a sudden, without any election or anything. Was Tolkien a hack?

He was a confirmed descendant of Isildur - the last King of Gondor. He is of the royal master race. He proved his loyalty to Gondor and his leadership skills in multiple battles on a completely voluntary basis.
>>

>He was a confirmed descendant of Isildur

So? would you crown a descendant of Washington king just because of his ancestry? also Aragorn might have been a good military leader, but he doesn't know anything about ruling. He's a ranger.

And he only won because of some deux ex machina spooky ghosts, not because of any superior strategy. Which was Elrond's idea.

I don't think that would be good, because there would be many heirs for Aragorn. It would possibly start a civil war. And Aragorn, a numenorian, having a son with Arwen, an elf, would make the best heir. Aragorn probably killed all of his bastards he had with common mortal women. No need to start a civil war here...

That's what I'm saying. Gondor gave up on kings when Isildur's descendants decided to become rangers in bumfuck nowhere. Faramir should have been declared the new Steward.

They gave up on kings because they thought Isildur's line had died out and the Dunedain (the mythical ruling class of men) had all but been wiped out. Aragorn was only a handful of them left, and they all mostly kept a low profile since Sauron would kill them in a heartbeat if he ever caught wind of them.

I got you, f a m

The chief official of the Shire was the Mayor of Michel Delving. Elected every seven years at the "Free Fair" held on the White Downs in the Westfarthing, the Mayor was the Postmaster and First Shirriff of the Shire.

The Hobbits of the Shire generally obeyed the Rules, that is, the ancient laws of the North Kingdom, and there was no real need to enforce them; all Hobbits voluntarily obeyed them as they were both ancient and just. Hobbits had lawyers, but these dealt mostly with wills and such matters; there is no record of a formal court system, still less of criminal prosecutions or punishments. Frodo stated that in the Shire no Hobbit had ever been known intentionally to kill another Hobbit. Sméagol's wicked behaviour, including his murder of Déagol (which occurred outside the Shire), led Frodo to doubt that Sméagol was a hobbit at all. Of course, it is probable that Sméagol's treachery was the result of the Ring's influence; the books make it clear that the Ring could tempt individuals to perform terrible acts.

At the resumption of the throne by King Elessar, the Shire again became part of the restored Kingdom of Arnor. Elessar permitted the Hobbits to keep their own laws and customs. (The office of Thain was also left undisturbed, though now, as intended, subject to and local steadholder of the King of Arnor.) In 1427, Elessar issued an edict prohibiting Men from entering the Shire and declaring it a Free Land under the protection of Arnor.

Checked.

The shire wasn't really a concern of men or elves, just a backwater taking up space on the map. That's why the ring went undiscovered for so long.

The Hobbits live a superior life of glorious Anarcho-syndicalism in which they themselves own the means of production and don't submit to any higher authority who seeks to take advantage of them. This is compouinded by Samwise's famous declarations like "share the load" and "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you".
>>
>>82149333
Technically the Shire did acknowledge the rule of the king when it was established but since hobbits seemed like such an inconsequential race, they were pretty much left up to their own devices.
>>
>>82149375
There might be something like that in place but nevertheless, so-called "wizards" are just a group of Maia. Mithrandir/Galdalf didn't even want to join because he was a very weak Maiar and afraid of Sauron, which is why he was given one of the three elven rings.

I've never checked the movies to see if you can spot it on his finger or not.
>>
>>82149375
>I was under the impression the wizards still have thier full power but are forbidden from using them by command of Eru
Gandalf's rule was to not directly confront Sauron, but he was allowed to help the people of Middle-Earth in any other way. Still, Gandalf was a prick, so he made a visit to Dol Guldur to "gather intelligence" to cover up the fact that he tried to "accidentally" take out Sauron.

A LotR Half-elf is a violation of nature that is forced to choose to become one race or the other.

Elrond is a half-elf who chose to become an elf. His brother (I think) chose to become a man, but had hugely extended life which he passed on the his descendants.

Aragorn was a Rohan puppet.

Gondor was exhausted by the war with Mordor while most of Rohan was unscathed being a more nomadic civilization. They could draw upon 10000s of cavalry from across their Kingdom despite losing key points in the war with Isengard.

There was no "muh nationalism" back then, the people of Gondor knew some form of tyranny was inevitable and didn't care who it was. Aragorn knew this hence all the "Let us together rebuild this world… that we may share in the days of peace." stuff, he is basically saying "I will be slightly less repressive than normal to prove there is no point rebelling and replacing me with a regime that likely won't be".

Rohan knows a foreign king like Aragorn is weak and that he depends on Rohan for power, his balls will be in their vice grip, so to speak. They can ensure Rohan will receive a large share of the rich volcanic soils left behind by Mordor and count on Gondor's support against Wainrider raids and meddling by western Kingdoms.

They could have killed Faramir but that would have demonstated belligerence towards Gondor and its elite and caused rebellion, so they married him to Eowyn. In doing so they ensured that the heirs of Faramir could be used by Rohan as an excuse to oust Aragorn or his descendents, they also placated Faramir a little, though I am sure deep down he still craved his rightful position, it changed the equation a little.

In time it is possible that a more unified Rohan-Gondor regime might arise. Either when Faramir or his heirs take over or personal union between the Faramir and Aragorn lines. It is possible that the power balance might shift and Rohan will lose political sway over Gondor.

Sauron was that boss that micromanaged everything. Like Bill Lumbergh in evil armor.
>>
>>82150765
You can avoid all of those if you're not a retard. And I meant not during Harry's time (the Shire was also fucked during LOTR though they don't show it in the movies).
>>

Orcs, you cocksucking 40kid. Go back to your nerd nest.

No, the hazards of Hogwarts are non-stop. They're just played up for comedy in the books and movies.

I mean listen to what you're talking about: Comfiest place on earth - a highschool full of wizard bullies.
Really?
>>
>>82150732
Can you somehow circumvent this by having several different holding companies in Gondor, Rohan and the Shire transferribg your savings back and forth?
What about donations and gifts? Can you get tax reduction?
How open is Sauron to the concept if a flax tax?

No, and maybe.

Since asset transfers are purely analog, monies in the process of being transferred are subject to tax liability via freelance pillaging in the post-conquest economic environment.

However, donations directly to the great eye might be tax deductible. But I'm not sure how that helps in any way with a 100% tax rate.
>>
>>82151197
But with a tax rate like that, all businesses might migrate into easterling territory where economic regulations aren't that strict.
It seems to me a tax reform is more than overdue. How does a process like that work in Mordor? What are the usual deadlines?
>>

Actually the Shire did have a Thane in the beginning and Arthedain gave them lands that the elves had abandoned.
>>
>>82151346
Its a bit like the DPRK "military first" policy, but in this case, its "Military only".

If jobs migrate east, they invade east, which is fine because Sauron has a huge base of human support made up of a large Morgoth cult.
>>
>>82151463
I'm sure that'll change once they see his tax policy!
>>
>>82150833
the basilisk snuck around the halls though and petrified/killed people so avoiding that was pure luck until Harry killed it.
>>
>>82151546
Something tells me the eastern folk will prioritize the rewards of Allah- I mean- Morgoth over low taxes.

Any here that would have been interested in Tolkien writing that New Shadow book that takes place 100 years after Aragorn has died with humans becoming tempted by evil, the youth 'playing Orc' basically destroying shit like niggers and a shadow cult forming in the United Kingdom of Gondor?
>>
>>82151599
The kids were advised to go around in groups. Only the ones who didn't got attacked. So only the retards. Plus the Basilisk was only active during Harry's 2nd year, I already made clear that I'm not talking about that time.

>Men of Numenor live a long time because they're descended from a half-elf,
Objectively incorrect. Their increased lifespan was a gift granted to them by Eru.
Elros and Elrond were the half elven, it was rare, and Elros wasn't the father of the entire race of numenor.
>>
>>82149778
Not really. Its a demonstrable fact that breaking oaths in middle earth is a fantastic way to get your entire bloodline cursed for an age or two.
>>

I'd be interested just out of curiosity but the reason Tolkien abandoned it is because he realized the age of man in the Fourth Age was so mundane and uninteresting.

Yeah, she and Sauron had a magic battle with spells cast by singing.

Same concept.

Technically Aragorn is elected, or at least acclaimed:

>Then Faramir stood up and spoke in a clear voice: ‘Men of Gondor hear now the Steward of this Realm! Behold! one has come to claim the kingship again at last. Here is Aragorn son of Arathorn, chieftain of the Dúnedain of Arnor, Captain of the Host of the West, bearer of the Star of the North, wielder of the Sword Reforged, victorious in battle, whose hands bring healing, the Elfstone, Elessar of the line of Valandil, Isildur’s son, Elendil’s son of Númenor. Shall he be king and enter into the City and dwell there?’

He has to be convinced to come into the city and the house of healing because he insists that he doesn't want to pass the gates until he had earned the right to claim the throne. Part of that is having the will of the people behind them.
The whole story of the men of westerness is that that its a harrowing of the faithful. Its even prophesized that the dunedain of the north would fall into obscurity but if they maintained their faith and honor eventually one would be worthy of reclaiming their greatness. Its a messianic story told from the POV of the messiah himself, and his cohorts.

No hes not. Its called humility. He learned at the feet of the wisest of the Valar, and learning empathy from the goddess of empathy.
Tolkiens universe didn't have faggot power levels like your chinese cartoons. True power comes from wisdom, empathy, and hope.

in the same vein, Sauron is feared for the most part not because of his outright power but his intelligence, cunning, and influence over others. He uses the world to his advantage and would prefer diplomatic cunning to achieve victory. He is clearly more powerful than gandalf, but neither of them compares head to head with the real gods. Remember he's just a spawn of morgoth and doesn't compare with Eru and his gods.

>>
>>82158012
Sauron was a disciple of Aule, the god of technology, artifice, and science as it existed. So was Saruman.
It speaks to tolkiens luddite view of technology, that it grants power without wisdom. Considering he was in WWI and lived through WWII he saw first hand the folly of power without wisdom, and that it led to opression and destruction.
Sauron and Mordor are very much personifying that force.
