People have (had) no reference for giant space bugs, so we buy into the film's vision for their look and movement, which in turn helps us believe the CGI.

Same thing applies to Jurassic Park, though I think that film blends CGI and practical much better than most films did at the time. And today even.

Well in Jurassic Park they were more conscious of how the CGI might not look as good, so they used inventive ways that you don't really notice much to hide it.

It's part of why the original Alien movie was good, they had to put effort into hiding it and keeping it mysterious, not just for the sake of the feeling of the movie, but because if you just saw the dude in the Alien suit running around it would look fucking stupid. A fair but of the CGI in Starship Troopers is actually Animation, Stop Motion and traditional animation, mixed with practical effects. The only parts that are purely CGI are generally the panning distance shots.
Also, since they had 1:1 scale models of the bugs, they had a better reference for how the bugs should move, since they had physical models with articulated joints (which could also contribute to the stop motion animation..

CGI artist here. I don't know if it was good planning or just luck but the easiest stuff to render is stuff in hard sunlight. There's very little bounced light in direct sunlight, and the shadows are hard and crisp. Soft shadows are slow to render, so is bounced lighting. So they really had just the right environment to make use of the technology that was available. If any of the shots had been at dawn or dusk they'd have look like shit, but flat desert, bright sunlight or artificial night lighting is just right for what they did.

I love when plebs try to put Heinlein in a box. Read The Cat that Walked Through Walls. They're on some space station and the character, some thug they rescued or something, complains about having to pay for air, and the Heinlein insert protagonist blows him the fuck out for his hippy fucking collectivist notions and that he has no appreciation for the value of life preserving resources and if you can't earn enough for the barest means of survival deserve to suffocate and starve to death.
Lazarus Long has a pages long sequence of him trying to prove that the child of the unrelated twins would be viable. He says if the math doesn't work out he was going to administer an abortifact. Even after that he comments on the fact that as a country doctor sometimes they just didn't slap the baby on the ass if the kid came out a monster, because it wasn't fair to make defective people a burden on society.
He chased hippies off his lawn with a rake on more than one occasion and kind of hated that they latched onto stranger in a strange land as some kind of manifesto.

Also, the protagonist isnt usually his self insert (until you get to late heinlein), Jubal, The Prof, Mr. Two Canes, etc were all side characters.
Also his early YA novels and short stories were just fun adventure stories in 50's future and were pretty A political.
