When Anakin got his arm cut off and went unconscious, I worried about him, When Anakin was in a speeder, i worried about him. I'm actually a big fan of VII, and I can do enough hand waiving or mental gymnastics to ignore the other parts of Rey's character-asspulls like her piloting/etc because theyre similar enough to Luke and Anakin that I can live with it.

But the end fight is truly the worst part, for sure. I don't blame anyone for getting taken out of it at that point, and its such poor moviemaking. There's no reason you can't have Rey show her force capabilities and fend off Kylo, while still keeping it within the grounds of the fiction you've told thus far.
Kylo was: wounded, traumatized, frenzied, not thinking clearly, impatient, etc. Honestly, all great traits of a dark side user. He wasn't thinking clearly, he was lashing out with rage and raw power.

Rey was fine too. She was playing safe, calculating, while also fighting with trauma from just seeing her mentor die, but she was also clearly out of her league, and that was fine. The scene on the cliff should have literally been it. She should have pulled together enough willpower and strength from the force to push Kylo back from his onslaught long enough to grab Finn and GTFO. Kylo then, at this point fatigued and wounded, would have faltered in chasing them and the story could have continued.

I was hoping with VIII they'd pull some big reveal: she had prior training as a child; that had been locked away/she was amnesiac. Luke had been training her academy style, as a young padawan, with others. Kylo was also one. But then the whole Knights of Rey betrayl/massacre happened, and she was the only one who survived, so Luke basically force bullshitted her memories away, threw her on a desolate planet, and gtfo of there. Her asspull tatics would even make SOME sense in that regard. She's not using the force to suddenly know how to do these things, she's using it to slowly tap into long forgotten skills she was trained in years ago.

But yeah, fuck JJ and VIII looks like its not going to be any better.

What makes being a Skywalker synonymous with a powerful force user? Luke was pretty run of the mill, he only beat Vader by using the dark side. Rey might have too, the movie isn't clear and the novelization said she did (movie>book canon however). You can bring up Anakin being space Jesus, but if Luke isn't a super powerful jedi then it calls into question how much you can inherit the force.

Meanwhile you have Dark Side using Kylo Ren who just killed his dad. It was meant to remove a weakness from his life, but it clearly had the opposite impact. He regretted it or at least felt sad about it, so it fucked up his use of the dark side. He was also wounded. That being said he was hitting his wound to amp himself up.

So basically being a Skywalker doesn't mean shit, Rey might have used the dark side just like Luke in his only lightsaber victory, and Kylo was physically and emotionally compromised.

It doesn't fix anything. It writes her competence into the plot, but the issue isn't really her competence in itself. It's how the movie seems to contrive her successes in ways that are lazy and unsatisfying. Making Rey "the Chosen One" (as if we needed that story the first time) doesn't make TFA any less of a tensionless bore any time Rey is doing something.

He threw aside his weapon and that is the ultimate test of whether or not he is a Jedi. It was something far greater than Obi Wan or Yoda would have figured on.

It makes more sense that he sees what's happening in the galaxy (Kylo falling, Starkiller base, etc) and seeks to break that cycle in an unorthodox manner as well.
