I totally get what you mean. It's time to stop going in the direction that everyone expects and start crafting original, interesting characters who don't just piggyback on their predecessors.
I'm hoping they'll start with a very different take on Kylo's outfit. If the trailer is any indication, his scar isn't going to be all that prominent, which is unfortunate considering I was envisioning a massive, ugly, Tyrion-from-the-books-tier scar on his face that would instantly set him apart from any character we've ever seen. However, I hope they go with a sleeker, more metallic look for his outfit, not rubbery-looking like Vader but more medieval-ish to fit in with his Arthurian motif. Hefty pauldrons and greaves, boots that click with every step, and a real chestplate-no more fabric coverup. And a cloak, of course. Some Old Republic aesthetics would defintely serve the setting well.

He can become a rogue agent, but he needs to be a greater threat than TFA kylo, he needs to be a lethal threat that spans into the third movie, and most importantly his motives and characterization cannot overpower or distract from the snoke arc.

I like the idea that snoke has just been using kylo to manipulate and emotionally weaken luke, and has absolutely no long-term goals for him.

There was nothing unique about him until he lost that final battle. He's not the big boss Rey has to level up to defeat. Rey's parents were part of the force cult that emerged after the Empire fell. They were force artifact hunters looking for the origin of the force on Jakku. Kylo may be smaller because as Rey learns his story, she starts to understand his point of view more while she questions Luke. So the biggest and most important chasm in ideology could be between her and Luke, which explains his place on the poster. I also said above that I think he did something morally grey in the past that contributed to Ben Solo's turn.

This fits with Kylo and Luke being juxtaposed and the divide between them. Rey is going to be caught between the way both of them see things while trying to determine her own conclusion and, possibly, eventually work to bridge the gap between them.
