He's a Christian, just like many real life scientists were. And/or he was being silly because he knows it's not literally the year 0 when Jesus was born (if he existed at all).
True story behind it: It was a joke by either Bob Gale or Bob Zemeckis (I forgot who), Zemeckis was a Christian. People making the movie (and later the viewers) took it seriously or ignored it but it was meant to be a joke because it's a well known fact that if Jesus did exist he was not literally born in the year 0.
