She's irreversibly Broken. Sam and Charlie in long Kiss Goodnight is not as broken. If this is partially a coming of age story, that's intentional. If she's meant to have a romance plot, you'll see that change. Even without romance, we know that eventually her hair comes partially down in VIII. A young female character letting her hair down is usually symbolism for growing up and becoming more of a woman.
