What is exactly is it's purpose these days? Good solid video posting and playback is offered on every website these days. Web video is perfected.

It is beyond obsolete.

Not with Google's pocketbook, I don't care how much "content creators" are bitching about it.

Google will phase it out eventually as it grows more and more useless as the web grows older.

The latter.

Just some ad monetization changes which will probably get worked out in the next year or two.

Twitch and dailymotion
>>
>>82059666
People go on YouTube for these things

1. music videos
2. They wanna see a clip of a certain movie/show
3. Movie trailers or game trailers
4. See the latest meme viral video

Nobody in the real world cares about "YouTubers" or "content creators"

youtube sucks, but the rest sucks even more.
There's no viable alternative other than the fucking twitch, an even more terrible site.

Anyway I never watched ads in years, even on my phone I use adblockers and I don't care about whiney "content creators".

You're forgetting the fact that every social networking website offers video. Video on the internet isn't special anymore.

Is there a website were content creators could make rated R (not necessarily nudity, but not out of the question either), and companies would be cool with running ads on the vids. YT is all so tame.
>>
>>82060633
Everybody using adblocker is what's forcing websites to go to subscription only content. Just watch, that's where the entire internet is headed.
>>
>>82060694
Youtube isn't just about playing video.

They take care of monetization and discovery. They literally advertise your channel for free to other channels. Beyond that, everyone has a google account and a lot of people sub to channels. It's entrenched as fuck and really easy for consumers to engage with. There are plenty of reasons why Youtube isn't going away anytime soon.
>>
>>82060897
true. So far only Filmstruck and Amazon (because of how much it comes with) seem worth it though.

>Youtube is dying because some irrelevant """e-celebs""" are upset

Oh am I laffin. Literally no one in tech would agree with this assessment. It breaks even/turns a slight profit, it's revenue is growing rapidly and it's owned by Alphabet. In contrast, standalone companies like Twitter, Snap and Uber lose astonishing amounts of money (literally billions a year) and nobody is acting like they're on their way out. Youtube isn't going anywhere, and all signs (revenue growth, the success of Youtube live etc) point to Youtube being an extremely strong company right now. If if were a standalone company, it would be one of the hottest investments in tech.

It actually doesn't make them any money at all, despite all the growth.

Revenue growth means nothing if it costs them a fortune for upkeep (it does)
>>
>>82060501
They had softcore porn and some hardcore porn with the "naughty bits" edited out. Like Virtual Sex with Jenna Jameson and they zoomed in so the cock didn't show. I still wish I'd saved those, to be quite honest.
>>
>>82061094
But I was planning in becoming a Youtuber :(
>>
>>82061782
>>82061758
Yeah like I said, it breaks even or turns a slight profit. This is actually an incredible position for a company of that size and maturity (which is a subsidiary of an incredibly wealthy and powerful company) to be in. Alphabet gets to sit on a potential gold mine (once they figure out a good monetization strategy) without losing a single dime.
>>
>>82061981
>Yeah like I said, it breaks even or turns a slight profit
No, it just breaks even at best. It never contributes to Google's earnings. If it did, it would be considered profitable, even if only by a little bit. but it doesn't do that so it makes them 0 dollars because the upkeep is so expensive. There is no "slight profit" in the equation.

The fact that they've had YouTube for over a decade, and still haven't made any money off of it, is abyssal.
>>
>>82059666
despite its shitty look nowadays, the youtube player is pretty reliable/comfy when you see it.

it's hit or miss when you read an article on a random news/magazine piece and the video included has it's own player that 1. plays automatically 2. lower bitrate to play faster 3. causes the rest of the page to load awkwardly

while youtube is just there and works.
>>
>>82060258
>Nobody in the real world cares about "YouTubers" or "content creators"

Except for the millions upon millions of people that do and continue to give them views I guess.

i had my fun. best internet years for me were between 2003-2010. i'm looking forward to the day i leave the internet entirely, i have no interest in needing to keep up to date with needing an anti-ad killer blocker ad blocker. forget about vpn, proxies, etc. all of that shit is redundant to me and should never have been necessary (even though it is) so fuck this.
>>
>>82062142
>No, it just breaks even at best. It never contributes to Google's earnings. If it did, it would be considered profitable, even if only by a little bit. but it doesn't do that so it makes them 0 dollars because the upkeep is so expensive. There is no "slight profit" in the equation.

"That doesn't necessarily mean YouTube isn't profitable, but it just means it's not a focus at the moment. YouTube, which primarily makes money from advertising within its videos, doesn't release revenue numbers (it is not separated in financial statements by parent company Alphabet)"

>The fact that they've had YouTube for over a decade, and still haven't made any money off of it, is abyssal.

Holy shit, no. A company in tech could be breaking even or hemorrhaging money for years and still be incredibly valuable (see Uber, Snap, Twitter etc). Again, literally not one reputable person in tech thinks that Youtube risk of dying. The absolute consensus is that it is an incredibly valuable company.

>"That doesn't necessarily mean YouTube isn't profitable, but it just means it's not a focus at the moment. YouTube, which primarily makes money from advertising within its videos, doesn't release revenue numbers (it is not separated in financial statements by parent company Alphabet)"
So she didn't even answer whether or not it makes money. If it did she would have said so, and she even mentioned how Youtube gets most of its money from ads, yet it's clearly struggling to deal with ad revenue since so many people use adblockers when using the website, or just watching videos from embedded videos instead of actually using the website itself.

>it's highly valued
That's great, but it still doesn't make money.

You can fuck off now, googleshill.
>>
>>82062369
>i'm looking forward to the day i leave the internet entirely
Why?
>>
>>82059688
Each year it gets hard to do fan edits on youtube and upload content from movies. I dont mean just being a jerk and uploading a full movie but if u wanna do fan edits and tributes of stuff, it gets harder to do it now with copyright strikes.

I cannot upload any content thats Disney as it gets blocked worldwide
>>
>rich Youtubers complain they dont get paid anymore
BITCH I make youtube videos for free. Its not that hard faggots.

H3h3 sounds so pathetic when they already have the editing and camera equipment.
>>
>>82062737
Look I don't know where you're trying to move the goalposts to (because again, it really doesn't mean shit if Youtube is turning a small profit or not right now), but the simple reality is that Youtube is not dying, nor is it even remotely close to being at any risk of death. If you want to believe that Youtube is on it's way out based on the word of h3h3productions or some shit, more power to you.
>>
>>82063073
>being this much of a butthurt googlebot
>>
>>82062887
Yeah their algorithm for detecting copyright infringements must be ridiculously complex at this point. I started uploading stuff that like shows and movies that my parents taped back in the 80's, and it would detect something from a little 20 second news break or commercial that's copyright protected and block the whole thing.

>>
>>82063403
Doesn't mean he is entitled to YouTube to give him money. He doesn't work for them, he's not their employee.

If these fucks want money for their shitty videos so bad, why don't they just move to another site or just make their own site where they control all the ads?
>>
>>82063478
They are moving to twitch to make huge cash on the idiots who throw donations at them
>>
>>82063478
He never said he's entitled to having youtube give him money though. He's blowing this thing out of proportions though. This whole thing is just a big bluff by the ad companies. THEY are the ones that need the youtubers, or more precicely, they need their audience, not the other way around.
>>
>>82060501
I used to jerk off so much to Dailymotion. It was awesome.
>>
>>82061182
Honestly, a disaster, I will immediately repeal and replace youtubeRed and make the internet GREAT AGAIN
>>
>>82060857

>>
>>82063613
you realize youtube could cause 90% of their "content" creators to quit and just horde all the money and search result views right?
>>
>>82063635
>used to

why don't you anymore?
>>
>>82063679
What? That's not how this works you moron. If 90% of their content creators quit, then so will the viewers who watch these content creators, thus the site will be dead.
>>
>>82063682
Because one day they decided they didn't want open there anymore and it was all gone. It's a shame, I don't like hardcore stuff, and Dailymotion was a great place to find fantastic softcore porn, including hardcore stuff edited down. I miss those days.
>>
>>82063652
I (others) can't just upload their shit to Netflix though.
>>
>>82063830
>they didn't want open there anymore
They didn't want porn there I mean. New tablet, not used to me saying "porn" yet.
>>
>>82063862
You can upload shit anywhere, you just won't necessarily get paid for it. It looks like the days of talentless hacks making fortunes off of stupid, cheaply made videos are over.
>>
>>82063797
no they just move onto the next best thing on the site.

you dont do all 90% at once.
>>
>>82063965
So instead of an abrupt death, it will be a slow, drawn out one. But at the end, once you're down to 90% of content creators being gone, so will be most of your site traffic.
>>
>>82063928
Seems like many are just switching to directly sponsored in-video ads, which is even more valuable to advertizers because it negates all the adblockers.
>>
>>82064005
half the videos are rehashed garbage. you really think its needed to keep people on youtube? get real.
>>
>>82064067
That's what you'll have to do now, but your videos will have to have some kind of actual quality for that to happen. Good thing overall.
>>
It's the "professional Youtubers" who complain the most about ads paying less or the algorithm not giving them enough hits.
>>
>>82060037
e-celeb faggots make like 300 less a month out of their 2k checks are are squealing a fucking storm yes
>>
>>82064128
>you really think its needed to keep people on youtube

Yes it is you retard. If you remove literally 90% of youtube's content that makes people regularly visit youtube, what the fuck would keep them there? They can watch shitty viral video clips and trailers on facebook or any random video site which no doubt will become far more competitive once 90% of youtube's content is gone. You sound like a fucking idiot who doesn't understand the first thing about business.
>>
>>82060857
Search for hand expression on YouTube.
>>
>>82064176
Fucking hate it when they bitch. They're basically deadbeats who've not been able to get a decent job and basically found an unsustainable goldmine. All they have to make is a few minutes of video per day, some as low as 2-3 min., and then they go back to NEET lifestyles.

If 90% of these content creators quit their (((fans))) will move on to whatever else is on the site. That's how audiences work.

if you're in it for money , don't bother. it becomes a chore and sucks all the fun out of it.

I'm just keeping my channel around in case there is something interesting to talk about or review. but I'm not expecting big crowds and ad revenue. in the past year I've earned 13 bucks.

I really can't say youtube is dying, I can say though from the viewpoint of a user that I don't really use youtube much these days.

I use it to listen to music, watch trailers and watch primitive technology or asmr videos. I find myself watching Twitch a lot more these days but I don't think youtube is dying.

I do think youtube is growing stagnant as games and movies are growing stagnant, they are dependent on one another. 'e-celebs' are quickly becoming annoying, doing the same old shit over and over again.

The only people bitching are the ones with questionable content that advertisers don't want to be associated with, the rest of media has lived with this for decades.

You Tube Red sounds like a porn service desu.

I dont click on any of those because it's easy to put exploits and viruses in .swf files

I swear they're all turning into DSP.

Cry more, faggot. You sit on your fat ass and drag videos in Vegas. Stop acting like your job is so hard

They had pretty good video quality for the time and the site was full of uploads of tv shows

there's always still Crackle even though it's content keeps getting fewer, worse and runs ads which implies they think their audience are all deadbeats by telling them to get off their duff and play with their kids etc.
>>
>>82070810
I have that version of the LotR dvd's aswell.
>>
>>82071282
Again, that's not actually my collection just a picture of one approximate in size to mine. Though I too have that version of LotR and I can make out a few other things I have as well like Thundercats etc.

youtube is not dying they are just fucking people over now and controlling who they want to see get views now. they can die if all the content creators say fuck you and stop making videos and kill them.
>>
>>82060520
YT never made money
>>
>>82071494
What is the reasoning for Google buying youtube then?

Just to stop any other site from getting a foothold?
>>
>>82071538
that and maybe they wanted to secure the technology behind it.
>>
>>82062369
I see where you're coming from, but the Internet is amazing in the sense that it gives you the opinions of millions of people -- it teaches you what people think and it's important in knowing where the world is going, much more than the media. Without that, you're stuck with Fox and whatnot, which is just awful.
>>
>>82070888
>>82071250

I think the reason stage6 was taken down is it got so many copyrite notices.

according to wikipedia they supported 1080p60 back in 2006-2008 which is pretty impressive
>>
>>82071538
>>82071564
Brand/marketshare bought them users for their spy services.
>>
>>82071591
Unfortunately I think the internet is becoming more centralised.

I was trying to find the graph that show webpage views over the last 10 years or so but cant. Basically the majority of people now just go on facebook/youtube/google compared to the past
>>
>>82071745
They're the only ones that are expanding into 3rd world stuff, probly skewing the statistics hard if you don't care about africa and india
nobody cares about india
>>
>>82071745
>Unfortunately I think the internet is becoming more centralised

This is true, but as it stands there's still quite a few decent websites to visit. The cancer is getting to it though, for sure.

here's some inside info
i doubled my views and minutes watched this month, over last month
and made half as much for it
youtube is run by a bunch of diversity hire CEO's who know nothing about making money
most youtube videos aren't even eligable for ads
and if some soccer mom complains that your video had a curse word in it, even if it gets a million views, it doesn't get ads
they're too stupid to just have adult content videos include adult oriented ads
like when cartoon network came up with adult swim
>>
>>82064176
idk, pewdiepie showed a screenshot the other day where one of his recent vids literally made $6 despite the typical millions of views.
He was just fucking around though, didn't actually go into it. He's pretty chill about the whole thing, not really in a position to sweat the lost wages.

But a lot of people are getting videos flat out demonetised en masse and shit, meaning they cease making any money on those vids, so some people are being hit pretty hard.

>>82064316
Then why don't you do it, smarty?
>>
>>82071831
I feel like the whole people making money from youtube videos is a bubble that is going to burst soon anyway
>>
>>82069758
But it doesn't download the .swf file, it automatically plays it in your browser, unless you right click>save as
>>
>>82060258
You forgot kids

Kids fucking love youtubers
>>
>>82072150
its the same thing, flash is dangerous as fuck as always. Probly not a virus but definitely could be at any time.
>>
>>82072169
children's videos get crazy amounts of views
>>
Fucking e-begging pieces of shits crying all over youtube. Just set up a patreon and sell some shitty merch, you are GO for making content you like without sucking up to advertisers.
>>
>the downfall of youtuber gibsmedatniggers
ohhhh yes feels so good ive been waiting on this forever
>>
>>82072287
There must be dozens if not hundreds of versions of "The Wheels on the Bus" on Youtube, why did that version specifically get so many?
>>
>>82072331
The second they set up a patreon some personal tragedy will strike while they rake in patreonbux. The videos they love will end.

There are other options though for sure.
>>
>>82072420
SEO, whichever shows up first on google results gets 100% of the views.
>>
>>82072420
Snowballed, videos with more views get indexed better in search results
>>
>>82072287
>that like-dislike ratio
>>
>>82060258
By real world you must mean your own mental fantasy world because a fuck ton of people care about youtubers
>>
>>82072420
Nah there are thousands of differentversions of other songs and rhymes, by different channels too. My guess is because they can pander to different tastes for kids (marvel superheroes, dbz, frozen, even call of duty)
>>
>>82072430
I see your point - patreon could lead to more e-begging bullshit.
>>
>>82072554
>watch comfy tutorial video
>youtuber suddenly tells you about his patreon
>asks you to donate money because he's struggling and needs to survive on donations
>feel bad because you know you can't just make a monthly donation to this random dude
>>
>>82072554
It's a subscription model instead of a pay-on-completion model which is literally the only one that has ever worked ever outside big corporate or government subsidies. If you don't have a product worth buying you have no right to money for it.
>>
>>82072372
The thing i'm waiting for is when facebook fails and zuccberg goes bankrupt. I swear i'm gonna throw a party that day
>>
>>82072676
I think he won't go bankrupt, he's not stupid, he's carefully preparing for the worst case scenario
>>
>>82072658
hmm i've seen some youtubers on patreon where they donations where listed as "per video" instead of "monthly".
also yes it sucks when people are still getting payed on patreon without making videos. but hey, if some suckers wanna blow their money..
>>
>>82060037
It's both.

y'know it's funny that one of the non-advertiser friendly restrictions on youtube is content showing/discussing alcohol, because ever since the ad exodus, half of the ads I ever see anymore are for vodka and beer.
>>
>>82060897
Please, there's millions of tech illiterate people in the world who don't know how to use ad block.

yeah and that number will steadily drop and choosing not to adblock will be the moral equivalent of not eating meat

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
