The wheelchair was lined with lead and Superman was trying to not look at the wheelchair dude because he felt guilty about the guy's situation. You can see at the beginning Superman trying his hardest to not look at the guys face and feeling all grumpy.

Watch when Faora tales out the soldiers - zip to one spot, zip to another, etc., like their speed is almost entirely straigjt-line like a dragster..
