Dooku seemed like such an interesting character that got turned into a generic mustache-twirling villain by the time this movie rolled around.

Dooku isn't petty enough to put the success of the Sith's Grand Plan at risk to save his own life. He's surprised, yes, but he quickly realizes that 1. Sheev has been grooming Anakin to become his true apprentice and 2. If he was defeated by Anakin, he deserves to be replaced by him. If Dooku's death makes the Sith stronger and increases their chances of destroying the Jedi and creating the Empire, then so be it.

Well what's cool about his character is his grayish morality. I think he was a disillusioned Jedi Master that left or got kicked out of the council. Saw corruption in the Jedi. Seems like he got lured to the darkside but in a more noble way than Anakin
