I wonder who added the Ashes to Ashes quote? Capaldi talks about Bowie all the time (eg, he recently said Time was the one song he'd like to play while flying in the TARDIS, despite the fact that it contains the words "whore", "quaaludes", and "wanking"). On the other hand, Cottrell-Boyce seems to be a huge fan too, and was going to write a Bowie-themed musical for Danny Boyle until Bowie turned down their request for the rights.
>>
>>81994190
Nardole's?

"Nardole was a companion of the Twelfth Doctor and former employee of River Song.
While working for Dr Song on Mendorax Dellora, he was beheaded by the body of King Hydroflax, who used him to obtain information on her whereabouts. (TV: The Husbands of River Song)

Following twenty-four years on Darillium, River went to her death in the Library and the Doctor reassembled Nardole out of fear of being alone. (TV: The Return of Doctor Mysterio)"

>>81994371
Capaldi seems pretty hands-on with his characterisation but I imagine the writers play into his fandom too by adding Bowie references in sometimes

The back half of this season is going to be crowded. Missy, Simmaster, pre-Delgado Master, First Doctor, Early Thirteenth Doctor, Curator, Watcher (Nardole), Susan, Second Susan (Bill), Valeyard…

There's really no room for any more characters, so presumably all the Mondasians who become the first Cybermen are actually not just like humans, they're the Doctor and his Time Lord family and friends.

3.Thin Ice: Rich sadistic and racist British Lord has a gigantic pet Eel that lives beneath the thames. Giant Angler Fish follow the Giant Eel and the Lord feeds the poor to his pets. Start with Ziggy. Expect some soaring, cinematic songs with a little bit of fuck-off-rock-'n'-roll sprinkled in.

From there, pretty much anything he made in the 70's is gold (Except PinUps, his covers album.) If you want really fucking comfy acoustic-based music with GOAT songwriting, go for Hunky Dory.

Aladdin Sane and Diamond Dogs are sort of mangled versions of the glam rock sound that normies associate him with.

Young Americans is a straight up retro-soul record.

Station to Station is funk-disco-rock, but with a razor-sharp sinister edge to it that can be attributed to Bowie being out of his mind on cocaine for the entire recording.

Low and "Heroes", Low in particular, are seminal avant-garde records which incorporate more conventional styles, but apply them in esoteric ways, usually involving innovative electronic sounds. These are considered his most definitive artistic statements and represent his divorce from the mainstream. Don't be put off by the 'experimental' label though, they're extremely listenable and will blow your dick off.

There seems to be a significant overlap between Bowie fans and Doctor Who fans, idk why. enjoy your listen dude.

"It's funny because Slavery in the United States was the legal institution of human chattel enslavement, primarily of Africans and African Americans, that existed in the United States of America in the 18th and 19th centuries after it gained independence and before the end of the American Civil War. Slavery had been practiced in British North America from early colonial days, and was legal in all Thirteen Colonies at the time of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

By the time of the American Revolution (1775–1783), the status of slave had been institutionalized as a racial caste associated with African ancestry. When the United States Constitution was ratified (1789), a relatively small number of free people of color were among the voting citizens (male property owners).[1] During and immediately following the Revolutionary War, abolitionist laws were passed in most Northern states and a movement developed to abolish slavery. Most of these states had a higher proportion of free labor than in the South and economies based on different industries. They abolished slavery by the end of the 18th century, some with gradual systems that kept adults as slaves for two decades. But the rapid expansion of the cotton industry in the Deep South after the invention of the cotton gin greatly increased demand for slave labor, and the Southern states continued as slave societies. Those states attempted to extend slavery into the new Western territories to keep their share of political power in the nation; Southern leaders also wanted to annex Cuba to be used as a slave territory. The United States became polarized over the issue of slavery, represented by the slave and free states divided by the Mason–Dixon line, which separated free Pennsylvania from slave Maryland and Delaware.

Congress during the Jefferson administration prohibited the importation of slaves, effective in 1808, but illegal smuggl

Both massive English pop-culture artefacts that originate in and permeate the second half of the 20th century and have huge normie appeal but a weird underbelly of avant-garde material for weirdos to obsess over. Plus both appeal to people interested in reinvention and shifting aesthetics. The links are pretty clear.

I hope the next episode gives Bill more to do. They wasted her in Smile. For a first TARDIS trip episode she was surprisingly superfluous. And for all the time spent on just 12 and Bill they learned very little about each other. She found out he helped people (didn't The Pilot tell her that?) and he tried to keep her out of the action until... he didn't cause he needed her to hold something. The main plot of the episode didn't make up for it since the 'mystery' was revealed in the opening and then all that's left on that account is to watch the Doctor try to figure out what we already know. At least the episode looked great.

>The man is too insecure about himself in real life.
I was saying this during Series 8. He was so pensive about taking on the role in interviews. Clearly worrying about how viewers were gonna react to his Doctor, stressing how he was 'less accessible', asking interviewers what they thought made the classic Doctors memorable and taking recs for what classic Who eps to bone up on. He's a great actor, he should have focused on it as a role instead of worrying so much about the legacy of the show.

Does Chibnall's work on Broadchurch tell us that his Who will be weighty and character driven, or that it will largely confine itself to simple genre expectations? Or both? Probably both.

Well I woke up today
And the world was a restless place
It could have been that way for me

And I wandered around
And I thought of your face
That Christmas looking back at me

I wish today was just like every other day
'Cause today has been the best day
Everything I ever dreamed

And I started to walk
Pretty soon I will run
And I'll come running back to you

'Cause I followed my star
And that's what you are
I've had a merry time with you

I wish today was just like every other day
'Cause today has been the best day
Everything I ever dreamed

So have a good life
Do it for me
Make me so proud
Like you want me to be
Where ever you are
I'm thinking of you oceans apart
I want you to know

Well I woke up today and you're on the other side
Our time will never come again
But if you can still dream
Close your eyes it will seem
That you can see me now and then

I wish today was just like every other day
'Cause today has been the best day
Everything I ever dreamed

I wish today was just like every other day
'Cause today has been the best day
Everything I ever dreamed

>>
>>81996555
A series of 10 60 minutes episodes would make it longer than any other series apart from series 4. There's not a chance that the BBC will stump up the cash for that again.
What about Countryfile? What about international timeslots? This info doesn't make any fucking sense at all.
>>
>>81996555
I'd never trust Chibnall to actually do it well, but I've long been interested in what could be done to reformat and reconceive Doctor Who in a way that feels up to date with 2017's big TV hitters. Kids will watch it anyway as long as you keep the iconography, sense of fun and visual imagination, but given the sheer flexibility of Who's storytelling there's surely a way of making it feel essential and addictive to /everyone/ again.
>>
>>81996838
Why do hundreds of other shows not have these problems?
They decide on a tone and don't try to make something that everyone will like. Which is virtually impossible to maintain anyway.
>>
>>81996838
I've often thought that Who would do well as a pure anthology, with a series of unconnected episodes with the common thread of the Doctor all uploaded for streaming at once, Black Mirror-style. It's not a perfect fit, but it fits Doctor Who as a concept far better than leaning heavily on the serialisation of the show, which is what most people suggest as a way of reinvention.
>>
Daredevil
Jessica Jones
Iron Fist
Luke Cage

etc

All of these are serials.
>>
>>81996920
That's antithetical to the whole concept of Doctor Who, though. Doctor Who's greatest strength as a format is that it can literally go anywhere and do anything, and that necessitates a huge variety of tones and styles that no other show really needs.
>>
>>81996984
Yes, that is accurate information. I'm not sure what you're trying to tell us here by singling out four Marvel shows.
>>
>>81996984
They all mostly stay in the same place, with a cast of recurring characters and standing sets. Why you'd want a show that's literally about being able to travel anywhere and meet anyone to be that is beyond me. The early Pertwee era tried it because of falling ratings and no budget, and it lasted about a season and a half before they started feeding all that back in again because they were struggling to make decent Doctor Who any more.
>>

Here's an example of what qualifies as a "pure historical" from tardis (I know, I know)

"The question of just how much prior to the broadcast/publication date a story must be set for it to be considered an "historical" is an open one. If a Peter Capaldi story were now to be set entirely in the 1970s, and the Doctor encountered no aliens, it would clearly be an historical."
>>
>>82000003
This is not a good definition. Most fantastic things on Doctor Who are alien, however some are Earth-based cryptids and fantastic inventions.

The Crimson Horror, for example, does not feature any extraterrestrials beside show's (semi-)regulars, but it features a fantastic prehistoric organism, a fantastic chemical compound as well as ahistorically advanced technology.

>Was reusing the name an opening shot in a war to officially recall canon status from Big Finish?
Of course not.

Moffat doesn't care what's canon. Even less than RTD did. He doesn't even point people to Paul Cornell's essay anymore, he just laughs and implies that anyone who cares about canon is stupid.

But if he did care about canon, he could just declare anything he wants. If Moffat said "Only the TV show, minisodes, and DWM comics are canon", that would be that.

Meanwhile, why would he want to make them noncanon when he just got their license renewed, gave them the rights to use everything up to 2013, and had the Doctor mention some of their characters in the anniversary special?

And finally, even if he bizarrely thought Big Finish being canon was somehow bad for his ability to run the show, why would he care? That's not his problem anymore, it's Chibnall's.
