Some carry-over discussion from late in the last thread:
Is the Rani a decent character?
Would Eric Roberts come back as the Master? Should he?
Has Claudia fallen for some masterplan of Moffat's?
How great is Bill?

Hi /who/, i just finished the 11th Doctor and i didn't really liked it. Should i watch season 8, 9, and 10 or wait until the 13th Doctor? I heard the showrunner is still the same.

Well, try it. You deffenetly should watch Heaven Sent anyway.

Series 10 is pretty good so far. This comes from a man who didnt like late Matt aswell.

This line made me sad. Both Bill and Water Heather sounded quite emotional, especially Heather. I hope Bill finds her again.
>>81881939
I can see Heather being Moffat's reserved get out of jail card for when he has to write Bill out at the end of the season. It would be like him to deliberately write in a potential exit clause that can be used or forgotten about depending on actor contracts.
>>81881939
I can't care about a character that appeared for a scene and died.

Heather will get her own Big Finish spin-off.
>>81881967
But hasn't it been heavily speculated on that Pearl Mackie was only ever signed up for one year? So it would make sense if Moffat has already planned to bring Heather back for the finale, if that is going to be how Bill leaves.

>What may surprise most is that for the majority of the runtime, it’s largely a two-hander between Peter Capaldi and Pearl Mackie. Sans the pre-title sequence, the first guest actor doesn’t appear until around 30 minutes in. This means the episode doesn’t feel massively eventful and is more of a slower, character-building exercise. With Bill and the Doctor only just getting to know each other, this allows plenty of time for a more in-depth look at their early Doctor/companion relationship and brings out more good work from Capaldi and Mackie.

Don't you think she looks tired?
What's with all the filming in Spain recently? It seems like they go all the time now.
>>81882895
Because Spanish fans just love Doctor Who and they have to pander to them and not only those in Britain. I remember I watched the premiere of Deep Breath in a Spanish cinema and my goodness, it was fucking packed but people were incredibly excited. It was actually rather endearing if you think about it.
>>81882895

>>81882456

>>81883048
I think Series 9 taught us that having a dark two-parter every week wasn't the best idea. A lot of the stories in my head feel all the same.
This series looks a lot more colourful and fun in comparison. But I reckon by the later half of the series it will get darker again once Bill has been set up and established.

I think another reason I like Bill so much despite only one episode, is that she's a breath of fresh air from the previous two.
I love Amy, and Clara was okay, but they were both 'special' in some way. I'm really hoping our new gal can just be a normal person who doesn't have any anomalous properties or any great destiny to fulfill, because almost all the NuWho companions have been like that, the exception being Martha.
And on a related note, this show really needs to stop trying to do season spanning story arcs. It rarely works out, and it's frankly tiring.

Honestly though, I'm okay with this, because it's about time they had some balls and had the LGBT stuff in the foreground for once, the bloody wusses.

It doesn't cancel out the fact that Doctor Who has always been quite subtle with that, because that's how most romance should be : subtle. Here there is litteraly no chemistry between Heather and Bill. I mean i kinda get it, it's some sort of love at first sight, but you don't see them talk about what they have in common, hell, you barely see them talk to each other. Most of the time, Heather is even quite cold with Bill.
Don't get me wrong, i know it's not a bloody romantic show, but if they want that to be the center piece of the episode at least try something that goes beyond a crush.
>>81886878
I think that was the point, it wasn't supposed to be a real romance. It literally was just Bill having a crush and having to get over it.
>>81886820
But it was mentioned twice after she died and Bill had some kind of flashback or prophecy of them both together...it just felt like more is there or something.

Didn't know McGann was in the Pet Shop Boys. I suppose you learn something new every single day.
Reading Plague City. It's pretty good. The Doctor, Nardole, and Bill make a good team, and the historical setting is nice. Plus, Bill's lesbianism is referenced in a smooth manner briefly, as well as her skin color (someone calls Bill a blackamoor at one point.) The alien monsters is pretty creepy, and Twelve's morals come into play, as well as how it conflicts with human morality (since they're in Plague times, surrounded by dying people.)
Anyone pulled their dicks to Pearl yet?
>>81885704
>Or maybe companions that are special in human ways and actually have unique skills to make the a useful part of the team.
Agreed. Whenever they actually use a companion's previously established skills, it works. Making use of Leela's tracking and Rory's medical knowledge did more to establish their character than reminding us in dialogue that she's a savage/he's a nurse. Zoe speaking ALGOL was ridiculous, but on of the most comfy scenes in her season.

But I think you're better off listening to almost everything, in order, at least up to Neverland, except for Invaders from Mars and maybe MInuet in Hell. There is genuine development of her character, and of her relationship with the Doctor, that I don't think will be as effective if you skip around too much more.

I for one approve of this slow burn approach with a focus on character building. The show has recently gotten into this weird slump where it seems to feel obligated to be EPIC!!!, so it's nice to see it slowing down, give us a breather, let the big stuff build up a little.

Come on, you know that all the times the first two Doctors called themselves human, were scanned as humans, were tracked by their human brainwaves, etc. are explained by the fact that he's half-human on his mother's side, which is far more canon than anything that was said in episodes written by scrubs like David Whitaker.

4>6 only if you want to hate both seasons because the arc plot/finale was terrible, because 6's was more terrible than 4's. But if you ignore the shit resolution and just enjoy the individual episodes, 6 has better individual episodes than 4.

Witchs/Magicians arent really good.
Inversion isnt very good aswell.
Hell Bent is a mess and noone could prove me wrong.
Series 3 had great Smith and Jones
Gridlock
Human Nature / Family of Blood
Blink
Utopia
Sound of Drums

But they really aren't, except for Hitler and Wedding, and it's no coincidence that those are two of the three bad ones.
Other stories contribute to the arc, but they work just as well—or even better—if you just ignore that.
Like when people talk about TRF/TAP as an arc story. Sure, there's the bit where the Doctor swaps shoes that was a vital clue to how the Doctor found out about his death, but you could watch the story knowing nothing about the arc and that scene works just as well. Of course the final scene tacked onto the end is all arc, but that's 2 minutes tacked onto the end of a 90-minute story that's already finished.

Adelaide Brooke is one of the most important people in the history of human space travel. One of Earth's first interstellar colonies having a statue of her makes total sense.
Or Wilf. Nameplate:

I'm actually alright with the special companions. For me it's all about their personality, for example, s7 Clara was absolutely atrocious simply because she was the blandest brick wall in the universe that just existed so that tumblr could self insert as edgy 11's girlfriend. S8/9 Clara on the other hand is my favorite companion because she actually has a personally with the perfect balance of being an independent person that can occasionally take control of the situation or help guide the Doctor and being a weak human that the Doctor needs to save. So far I'm not much of a fan of Bill sense she just seems like a character that's there for banter and occasionally thingken of Heather.

She has the full power of the Heart of the TARDIS. She can rewrite history and change the very laws of physics.
Which, of course, implies that a single TARDIS can do shit like this all the time, so imagine what a whole Time War full of thousands or millions of TARDISes and DARDISes must have been doing to history. (Well, as it turns out, nothing at all, they were just used as transport to get to boring space battles or even ground combat battles…)
>>81895399
