Of course the mastery of the force is greater in 123, the Jedi have had continuity for ten thousand years.

Proof of this is Vader and Palpatine still being as powerful in 456 as they are in 123.

Also, if you watched Clone Wars or Rebels, you'd know a lot more about the inner workings of the Force according to the new Star Wars Canon.

They really need to have a standalone movie set in the Old Republic, which would help flesh out the idea that the jedi/sith in all of these movies have lost touch with the force to some degree. It would also help give more meaning/scope to this overall conflict, which has lasted for tens of thousands of years.

Could explain the origins of the force, could have focused on the basic conflict between the Sith and Jedi, and would have more interesting/diverse force powers other than push/pull/lightning. If they did that, it could help out in fleshing out this newest trilogies themes/conflicts, but instead they're likely going with beating a dead horse with already developed characters.

Guess my rant ended up being about these standalone movies, where besides Rogue One, they are going to be a waste (Lando, Han origin, etc.).

It was objectively good in the 80's. The prequels were so horribly misdirected and ill conceived, it starte dthe decline, but AT LEAST it did something a little bit new. It could have been really good however, a great missed opportunity. I think anyone can see though that the out of control commercialization of the new Star Wars movies is a sickness that has destroyed Star Wars to the brink of no return. Right now it has thrown out of the window any semblance of good realistic characters and story in favor of rehashes, mary sue's, contradictory motives/actions and pandering to nostalgia, which is also odd considering the shit treatment the original cast has gotten, especially Luke.

They'll just keep rehashing familiar characters to the obvious, slightly spinning things, and adding smidgeons more of information to the lore.

Lucas somewhat had the right idea with the prequels (used extremely loosely), where he wanted to explore the more mythic status of the jedi when they were at their peak. Problem was, Lucas sucks major ass at writing, and his ego got in the way of his own shortcomings (he needed help with his scripts).

New directors/writers that are actually passionate can help turn this around. I'm actually slightly looking forward to TLJ, but only because this director doesn't fuck his movies up, while still having an interesting story to tell. J.J. doesn't fuck his movies up, but doesn't usually end up doing anything that interesting with them either (thus TFA was disappointing, not bad).

Originals were written very well, had classic myth structuring, and were clearly inspired.

Prequels were written terribly by George, erratic structuring with forced romance (also written terribly), not enough focus on Anakin/Obi Wan bromance, Jar Jar was cancer, and Attack of the Clones should have been an entirely different movie.

Newest trilogy didn't want to fuck up, so ANH = TFA, put a strong female lead with little to no character flaws in as main character (thus helping alienate the majority male fan base, the ones that buy most of the shit), make future male good guy a patricide emo fag, force friendship between Finn and Poe, and you get an uninspired smoke and mirrors bonanza.

Throwing Luke back into the mix is the only hope for this newest trilogy to be appealing at all.

It's just the way that film has gone. There's no middle-ground between serious, straight scifi and rollicking scifi adventure any more. It's got to be either super profound and meaningful (or at least pretend to be) or a wacky cartoonish romp. If you look at the OT, they land right in that middle ground, there's some levity, there's some philosophy, there's some fun. The dialogue doesn't labour under either forced profundity or forced humour, it just moves along. You don't get that any more with the prequels and the new movies. Like, C3PO might have had fun moments, but in the OT they were incidental, the newer movies set someone up for a joke, make the joke and then give you time to have a little laugh before continuing with the movie.

Han Solo's death was fucking hilarious. I imagine they put it in because the movie need some emotional stakes (Also the fact that Harrison wanted to die). It doesn't work at all because all the new characters don't know Han well enough to really get that emotional and Leia had divorced him and got over it pretty easily. The whole character of Han in the movie was like some duddering old man trying and failing to recapture his youth and his death felt more like euthanasia than a horrific murder or a valiant last stand.
If they wanted to kill Han they should have done it in a ROTJ like Harrison wanted to when audiences and Harrison actually gave a shit. (Although I'm glad they didn't because that would be bad for other reasons).
I bet you they won't even mention Han in the next movie.

This shit was in the original trilogy too. Vader read Luke's mind about Leia and Yoda said that they could see the past. The only new Force power was stopping a blaster bolt in midair.

If Han's death wasn't in TFA it would be considered worse than TPM
