What does everyone think of the new vinyl covers? Chimes has that new one, and Spare Parts has pic related. Better or worse than the original covers, or just different?

I think theyre just different, both great. Whilst I like the original Spare Parts cover, the new one has the cyber police which is great
>>
>>81868014
Perhaps he originally meant for different Time Lords to have different colour regenerations? The idea behind the jesus stance regens was to standardise how regens looked, so writers wouldn't have to try and re-explain them all the time. Which worked - see in Moff's era the many regens (River's, Doctor fakeout, actual Doctors, etc).

Although Moff had the General regen not in that stance, and 11 kinda had a second snap regen.

Headcanon: Rassilon biologically tinkered with Time Lord regeneration to make it an explosive jesus-stance thing as a self-defence mechanism, so dying Time Lords were still useful in battle - explaining why Classic Doctors didn't do them, but NewWho doctors did.

>>81868056
Yeah I prefer the original Chimes cover but the new Spare Parts cover is better IMO
>>
>>81868026
Spare Parts wins for having a picture of a Cyberhorse instead of the generic blue Davison face; both Chimes covers are pretty good.

The Doctor stared at the whip in his hand.

"You want me to do what to Bill?"

"It's realistic. You gonna have to do some rap with Bill," said the man.

"Rap? Are you sure that's what he meant?" said Bill.

"At least, that's what the piece of paper said. I mean, unless I missed a letter, or something," said Nardole.

The Doctor looked at the slave owners, and shrugged.

"Hit the beat, Nardole. Where's a perigoto stick when you need one?"

I'm not sure I'd go far as to say "problem" but it's certainly something writers would consider. RTD focusing on storytelling efficiency makes sense. Regeneration is hard enough to sell to a new, modern audience, I think RTD made a smart choice.

There are some good ones, but in general the photoshopping is pretty bad even if the concept is good, and you quickly realise they only have 2-3 photos of each character to reuse over and over.

Like this one. Great concept, but the decolour filter didn't come out right, they did angle the pic right to fit in the locket, and the "snow on the lens" effect is ridiculous-looking.

I agree. Sometimes it's painful because the concept is really good, but they just obviously can't execute it very well.

Can't forget that a tonne of big Big Finish fans (like me, and probably quite a few others in this thread) pirate quite a lot of the audios. So we have a fanbase calling certain stories kino, but not actually buying them that much. Creates this weird thing where Big Finish hear that the fans consider stories GOAT, but the sales don't always reflect it.

I wonder what the sales are like on the couple of stories they don't offer download for (because of rights reasons).

>Can't forget that a tonne of big Big Finish fans (like me, and probably quite a few others in this thread) pirate quite a lot of the audios.
That's a good point, and is something I've seen Rob directly address before too:
>And one day Big Finish will end - and it won’t be because the BBC took away the licence, or the Doctors decided not to record any more, or because the writers ran out of stories (never that!). It’ll be because the well-meaning enthusiasm of fans who sincerely *love* Big Finish will bankrupt it.

I also remember something about some BF ranges ending because piracy effected sales too much, but maybe somebody else said that.
>>
>>81868486
>They made one, and no, The Maltese Penguin was a sub bonus, so it doesn't count. The character's hardly had a shake on audio.
The whole notion of "side steps" was terrible marketing.

I get what they were going for, trying to appeal to NA/EDA/DWM readers by saying "don't worry, you can just get this one without knowing any other BF".

But the effect was the opposite, everyone thought it meant "don't worry, you can skip this one".

And at least Benny already had her own established series, and Iris had already been in Excelis and they were talking about a full series for her too, but poor Frobisher got hosed.

Fun fact about Technophobia: "Originally, this story was intended to be about sleep deprivation. For this reason, Matt Fitton changed the plot of this story. (Vortex 87)"

Are they even trying to be creative at this point, though? It just looks like the logical conclusion of having a man whose favorite story is Death to the Daleks in charge. Plenty of focus on recreating how something was on TV, little or no desire for "new" or "different". Their idea of a new direction is having both Ace and Mel.

I don't think they big finish even needs to make new content at all for a good while. They could just have their software developers and marketing team figure out how to repackage what they currently have and probably increase their revenue by orders of magnitude. They could even put their shittier stories on sale for dirt cheap in waves as a "last time offering" sale and then void them from their catalog forever.

>Are they even trying to be creative at this point, though?

Not generally, I wouldn't say. But it bleeds through here and there. The Torchwood and River Song lines have some excellent, creative stories. The Main Range, 4s line, and 8s line rarely do these days, and that's where I imagine Briggs' influence is strongest.

I don't even think Briggs is a bad writer, he used to write some great stories, and I think he's a fucking excellent voice actor. But he's a bad Big Finish overlord. Gary Russell was better IMO, though hardly perfect.

We're a long way from the days of Scherzo friends.

I hadn't read that.

It's weird that he didn't hear it at 10, but defends it as if he had. And honestly, he defends it a lot harder than I would.

It's also weird that, after all that waffle about morality at the start, he never mentions that the Fourth Doctor is pretty far from being a moral hero in this one. He's an asshole to a desperate alien species, so they're forced to pick a planet at random to migrate to, and when that happens to be Earth, he murders them all.

I wonder if there are any blind people out there that love doctor who and for them big finish is just exactly like the show. That would be pretty sick.

Late 2006, when Gary Russell quit to go work fulltime for RTD.

By January 2007, the Eighth Doctor had been spun off to his own separate series.

It just baffles me how someone can manage to make Doctor Who dull. That should be really, really difficult, but somehow Briggs and co. have managed to smother any element of weirdness or unpredictability. We need a proper lunatic in charge, like Miles or Dave Stone in their prime - someone who would turn the whole thing on its ear. Same with the books.
>>
>>81869230
What's that in terms of audios? What was the first Briggs Finish doctor who audios?

Seven basically hypnotized her and made her fuck off at the earliest opportunity, that's why her goodbye scene in Dragonfire is so weird. He needed to get on with genociding the Daleks and preparing for Fenric's games, and he knew she'd just get in the way.

I chatted with them a year or two ago about their thoughts on setting up a streaming service. They explained pretty well why they hadn't yet (they lack the streaming rights for a lot of audios), although they noted people wrote in to ask them about it. They did end up putting loads of stuff on Spotify though, see here https://www.reddit.com/r/gallifrey/comments/5v8tpj/all_of_big_finish_on_spotify_organized_into/ (that link organises it way better than Spotify itself, hence me linking to Leddit)

The problem with the books is that, since the new series started and BBC Enterprises realised there was money to be made, they're explicitly meant to be tie-in merchandise.

You can immediately see the difference by comparing the last batch of EDAs and the first batch of NSAs. Same range editor, most of the same writers. But they're aiming at a different target market, and some of the writers just fail, while others succeed and maybe that would be interesting if you were 12 years old and didn't know much about Doctor Who, and a handful of them manage to somehow sneak in one good book and then never again.
>>
>>81869408
>I chatted with them a year or two ago about their thoughts on setting up a streaming service
I remember that.

So are they happy to just answer any questions? Like, if that's what the email is for than that's great, but I don't want to bother them.

Yup, they seemed happy to talk. There are different emails for like sales and tech support question, enquires seems to just be the general questions one, so it's not like you're distracting them, that is the actual email for questions.

"Until July 2006, Gary Russell served as producer of the Doctor Who audios. When Russell left the company, Jason Haigh-Ellery and Nicholas Briggs took joint responsibility as Executive Producers. Briggs now bears creative responsibility for Big Finish's Doctor Who range, along with script editor Alan Barnes. In late 2007, David Richardson took over from Sharon Gosling and now holds the title of Producer, organising the schedules across the company's output, as well as having creative responsibility for The Companion Chronicles, Lost Stories, and the spin off Jago & Litefoot. The Managing Director of the company is Jason Haigh-Ellery."

Its like the eternal Battle where the monster on the cover isn't the antagonist which allows for some really good development of them.
>>
>>81869454
The NSAs just frustrate me so much. It's not that aiming for a younger audience is a bad thing - in terms of Who's vitality as a series it's actually a lot healthier than aiming your books at forty-something convention goers - but kids and young adults aren't actually looking for formulaic runarounds written by Trevor Baxendale. You can tell a creative story within "young adult novel" limits; Gareth did it wonderfully with Only Human, and most of Terrance Dicks' original books never really strayed from that territory (apart from the bizarre "friendly spot of rape" incident with Warmonger). But, like with the early EDAs before Miles came along and saved the line, they've realized a set number of people will buy a book with "Doctor Who" on the cover regardless of what's actually inside, so we get The Glamour Chronicles. And any intelligent 13-year-old would be insulted by the fucking Glamour Chronicles.

The nature of a show with change fundamentally baked into it is that it will nearly always be great for some people, and terrible for others. S8 and S9 were the Golden Age for me, and the worst series ever for others. It already is "great again" for some, will be "great again" for you one day (most likely), etc.

so /who/ for series 11, the Doctor Who Budget is severely cut.

Chibnalls response is to recreate the UNIT era, 13 earthbound stories, No Tardis, no time travel.

It looks like it'll be like this for at least 2-3 seasons.

my question to you is, could Doctor Who survive this in this day and age?
>>
>>81869859
The problem isn't so much that it's for 13-year-olds, it's that it's tie-in merch for 13-year-olds. Which means, at least to the people at BBC Enterprises, that it's supposed to be as widely-appealing and inoffensive as possible. Maybe an experienced professional editor could push back on that, but that didn't happen.

Paul Magrs can't write that way, and it's horrifying to watch him try, while Trevor Baxendale can write that way, and that's even worse, and… that's around the time I stopped buying them regularly.

>>81871122
They'd love to hire new writers.

But they don't have the time to mentor someone who doesn't already have experience with audio plays, or who doesn't already have experience with Doctor Who. And where are they going to find anyone with that experience who doesn't already work for Big Finish?
>>
>>81871198
>But they don't have the time

Then they should stop producing a trillion mostly bland stories a year. Slow down. Quality > quantity for once.

But they've kind of screwed themselves over with how they've presented their business models, so fans would get pissed off if output lowered. They've backed themselves into a corner bit. Hard choices need to get made somewhere.
>>
>>81871122
He definitely wasn't saying he was going to hire anybody new lol

President Obama! he's promised to end the recession! Bad times will soon be over, Ginger!
>>
>>81871267
I'd go through the 4chan archive to find the thread with the quote in it, then google the quote.
>>
>>81871232
Yep. If they cut the quantity down to 1/4th as much, they'd need to get 4x as many customers to make the same money.

But that's not going to happen. The quality isn't going to get 4x as good. And, even if it did, people wouldn't find out (or believe it) right away. And, even if the word of mouth were perfect, the potential market probably isn't big enough to expand that much anyway.

So we're basically screwed forever.
>>
>>81871315
Eventually writers are going to start dying, like at some point they're going to be forced to hire new people.
>>
>>81871371
Or they'll just eventually go bankrupt, and hopefully someone will start a new company and buy the license and hire Nick to be the liaison to actors and the BBC but not put him in charge.

Mixture of musical cues, sound effects, and characters commenting on it. Sometimes they don't convey it, so it surprises you as well as the characters.

It works better in "The Side of the Angels" than "Fallen Angels" (which is a crap Blink remake essentially), but neither work great.

Latest news is that, according to yet another "insider" the next Doctor will be Michaela Coel whos previous acting experience was some netflix series.

http://nerdist.com/doctor-who-next-doctor-michaela-coel/

Personally I'm OK with this, but I think there are more interesting names in the mix with more experience and I suspect that if they do go for a female Doctor they might be more likely to choose a well liked actress who is already a household name to soften the inevitable backlash. Claire Sweeney would be a good choice or maybe Miriam Margoyles or Dawn French.

Well, BBC already said that Doctor won't be a woman, so don't think this is true.

Some nimno in the complaints dept said that. Do you really think they had a direct line to the Moff and Chibbers and said

"There's a concerned father who just emailed me, worried his autistic son might be confused about the doctor changing sex, you know EXACTLY like the Master has already done. I don't suppose you could give me some spoilers about the series' most closely guarded secret can you?"

And that not only would the Moff and Chibbers willingly volunteer said information into the public domain but they wouldn't just fall about laughing like Smash Alien Robots over the fact that the child has been watching a show where at least 3 timelords have changed gender already, with openly gay, bisexual and pansexual characters in it and yet the father is concerned his son will be confused now.

You mean you've never spread smash on top of a dairy milk?

Goes really well with a bit of grated cheese if you use it as a dip for flakes too. Everyone used to do this in the 60s and it was called a 66 it got so popular that the UK's biggest ice cream manufacturer, Mr Whippy, decided to make a futuristic sci-fi version replacing the potato with ice cream and the cheese with strawberry sauce, which he called the 99.

These days the popularity of the 99 has eclipsed the 66 but when I was a kid growing up in the 80s ice cream vans would have 2 nozzles one for ice cream and the other for instant mash.

Matt Lucas is fat and is doing a good job as a companion so far. When a Doctor isn't that physical, the companions/assistants do all the running while they just sit down. Hartnell was very ill during filming of his last story and John Hurt had cancer (not that that was known to the public at that point), both did fine in the role so a Doctor that wobbled a bit when they run would not have much problems if the scripts account for this.

Really like the music for it. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J40WhxnkC1I)

Are people generally happy with Murray Gold these days? The Pilot had some super whimsical music. I liked a lot of tracks from series 8 and 9. He can be quite the chameleon; his music for Moff is very fundamentally different than RTD's.

Food for thought:

9s theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVkfqq1aBlQ

10s theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=844_IkhcP-g

11s theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rqz_JyAUZyg

12s theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfmmRHh6O5o

All very different.

Whatever feelings you had for girls at that age, it's possible for boys to have towards other boys too.
Though typically those gay boys/girls won't understand their feelings as well because it's not considered the 'normal' way to think (which means they might ignore/suppress it to seem more normal) and it's not portrayed anywhere near as much in media
>>
>>81874426
thats what i find endearing and amusing about it though, like if they get super annoying people can just hijack it and say "dur i suck ignore all my points". plus regeneration jokes. idk, ive never been bothered by all the trip stuff, obviously some of them are annoying but so are plenty of regular anons, and desu i think people REEEEing about trips derail the threads more than the actual trips

Colin Baker and Peter Capaldi (who was in Torchwood as well). Capaldi's appearance being taken from Caecilius in the Fires of Pompeii is actually explicitly referenced in Deep Breath and The Girl Who Died.

Karen Gillan, Eve Myles and Freema Agyeman all previously appeared in Doctor Who as different characters, too.

Something else with the music, and I've actually e-mailed Big Finish about this - it's annoying they don't (can't) use a lot of Murray Gold's music in the audios.

Think how comfy 10s audios would have felt with this playing during Donna/Doctor bantz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Wzuc54ame8

Then this playing during action scenes https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oEcij0ARkmU

Or the River Song theme during the River audios, or even just in Doom Coalition when River shows up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZUZzgI_LGU

etc

IIRC they told me they'd look into it but they already had their composers and it wasn't worth the clusterfuck of negotiating incidental music rights and stuff. Not a huge deal, but it would be super neat if they used the show's music (beyond the theme, of course).

Yeah, his writing isn't what it used to be. Shadow Police, his comics, and even his Twitter don't have that spark he used to have. If anything, he reached his creative peak in the early 90s writing VNAs. And it's generally a bad thing if your best writing came from your mid twenties.
