Disney fundamentally misunderstood Star Wars. People don't love Star Wars because the movies are so goddamn great. People love Star Wars because the universe is great and the movies are decent enough windows into that universe. That's why prequels didn't really scare fans away despite being average movies, they handled the universe well. Disney, on the other hand, sacrificed the nuance of the universe to make each individual movie better. And that inevitably will create a patched up universe that nobody gives a shit about anymore. It arguably already has, I sure don't treat 7 as cannon.
