The Office is an amazing show. The thing is, a lot of the humour stems from an idiot who overestimates his own abilities and has no self awareness and little shame. So naturally it flies completely over the heads of Americans who are all like this.

They turned Steptoe & Son (a show primarily about despair and hating someome you love) into Sanford and Son. They were running off original scripts at first and you can see when shit their pants and just cant make the old man a thoroughly dispicable poisonous scumbag actively ruining his sons life because he is afraid.
