TL;DR: Need to do presentation. Recommend me the absolutely 101 chinese films
I need to do a presentation about Chinese language cinema and I'm not sure what films to choose. It's for a language course, not film studies or something like that, so it's not like I have to go super deep.
I will mention a very brief overview of the history of the industry there, and then I want to mention one director/one film from each major region. I think I got...
Hong Kong: Wong Kar Wai (In the Mood for Love/Chungking Express)
Taiwan: Edward Yang (Bright Summer Day/Yi Yi)
China: ??? Zhang Yimou and Red Sorghum is the only thing I've thought.
So any recommendations on representative films for mainland China? Or maybe another one for Taiwan? Hou Hsiao-Hsien maybe? If so what movie? (I don't know where to start with his filmography myself)
I haven't watched too much chinese films myself, what I want to do is to recommend some more-or-less contemporary directors and enjoyable movies for any casual.
Seven Samurai
Oldboy
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
Uncle Boonmee

Shaoling Soccer or Kung Fu (Older SC comedies)
