When Luke says to Rey to reach out, she says she sees the light, the dark side and the balance.
Luke wants to end the Jedi and bring forth a new kind of force user, that neither light nor dark side.
This can is also hinted in this poster, were Luke (the light) and Kylo (the dark side) are opposites of each other, but Rey is in the middle. She also has a lightsaber that is blue (commonly used by light side Jedi) and red (used by the dark side).
She will the new kind of force user, that brings balance to the force by not choosing sides.

The Force was their version of a religion or a belief system. Jedi and Sith were the priest/paladins of the faith who acted in accordance to their own interpretation of the text as now being shown in the Tree.
